Artificial Paradise technically started with a song called West Coast that we started in a hotel room in New Orleans in 2016. That song led to a series of others over the last eight years that didn’t quite make sense together, but we kept collecting songs and we kept writing; as we do, in different hotel rooms and studios dotted around the world. The shape of a new album started taking place and so much of the lyrics, and so many of these songs were written in the last couple years while we navigated a world, full of artificial stories and constructs and paradise - all around the world and people’s digitally broadcasted lives and the lives that we create for ourselves and the stories that we tell ourselves and others. And as we continue to talk about this new paradigm, the phrase ‘artificial paradise’ kept coming up over and over and over again. And it just feels all too resonant with the world we currently live in, and the aspiration of so many people, for better or worse. Today we were told that the kings health has taken a turn for the worse, and as we await news, it’s hard to shake the feeling that the nation is losing its collective grandfather or father. King Harald was the first king to be born in Norway in 567 years. Since then he has been part of the Norwegian experience in so many ways, like a personification of a modern Norway. As a young child he had to flee the country when Germany occupied Norway during WW2, he spent part of his childhood as a refugee in the US. He would later grow up, and fall in love with and marry a commoner. Despite his father originally being against it. He also represented us in the Olympics, as a sailor, multiple times. He carried our flag in the Tokyo Olympics. He was also a lifelong football fan, a Tottenham fan to be specific, and a lover of sports in general. He has been present for numerous Norwegian athletes over the years. And he has also been present for so many ordinary Norwegians, whether they were going through the better or the worse part of their lives. But despite all that, king Harald had large shoes to fill when he started his reign. His father, king Olav, was loved. But over the years, king Harald has earned the people’s hearts. And he has done so by being there by our side, crying with us when the nation was hurting, celebrating when we had reason to celebrate. He has openly embraced that Norwegian people come in many different forms and shapes, and has had an amazing ability to be everyone’s king. A rock that we could all rely on. So, as we brace for the news, whatever they may be, one thing is for sure.. it has been a privilege and an honor to grow up in King Harald Vs Norway. We couldn’t have asked for a better king 🌹

17 years ago today, we opened our first sweetgreen restaurant in Georgetown, DC in a tiny 560 sq ft building off campus right after graduation. The idea was simple, but big: to redefine fast food. We served a few hundred customers and played Robot Rock by Daft Punk as our first song. Today we operate over 230 restaurants in over 20 states, and serve millions of customers. Thank you to our devoted customers, farmers, partner suppliers and dedicated team members - past and present- for being a crucial part of this journey and helping us advance the Sweetgreen mission of connecting people to real food!
