JUST IN: Dyna Robotics just published one of the most important research papers in robotics this year. It could fundamentally change how robot foundation models are trained. A scaling law that transfers from human video to robot performance. Dyna-2 is out and it's 🔥 Here's what that means in plain terms. Dyna-2 was pre-trained on ONE MILLION hours of egocentric human video, 170 years of continuous human experience, cooking, folding, assembling, cleaning. And as that human data scaled, robot performance improved. Predictably. Monotonically. Across 39 tasks on two different robot embodiments the model had never seen. → 1,000 hours pre-training → 20% normalised task performance → 10,000 hours → 28% → 100,000 hours → 45% → 1,000,000 hours → 53% Human video exists at effectively unlimited scale. Every cook, every factory worker, every craftsperson wearing a camera is generating training data for future robots. But the finding that stunned even the researchers, world modeling is what makes the transfer work. A model trained to predict future video AND actions massively outperforms one trained on actions alone. Video is the new scaling axis for robotics. One more jaw-dropping data point. 13 minutes of teleoperation data was enough to fine-tune Dyna-2 to open a bottle cap using two five-fingered robot hands. John Carmack on the importance hard work: “For decades, I worked 60 hours a week” “I was never one of the programmers who would do all-nighters or work for 20 hours straight,” programming legend John Carmack begins when asked about his work routine. “My brain generally starts turning to mush after 12 hours or so. But hard work is really important, and for decades I would work 60 hours a week. I would work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week.” He continues: “I had a little thing in the back of my head where I was almost jealous of some of the programmers who would do these marathon sessions. Like Dave Taylor, one of the guys we had at id Software, would be one of those people who would fall asleep under his desk sometimes and all the classic hacker tropes about these things. Part of me was always a little bothered that wasn’t me. I wouldn’t program 20 hours straight because I’m falling apart and not being very effective after 12 hours . . . There are people who can work on 4 hours of sleep and continue to do good work, but there’s a lot of people who just fall apart. I always try to get 8 hours of sleep . . . you can work 100 hours a week and still get 8 hours of sleep if you prioritize things correctly. But I do believe in working hard.” John disagrees with the backlash against hard work and voices support for game developer’s comment that “40 hours a week is kind of a part-time job.” “If you’re doing what you think is important work that you’re passionate about, working more gets more done. It’s really not possible to argue with that if you’ve been around the people who work with that level of intensity.” He believes people who argue that you’re less productive if you work more than 40 hours a week are misinterpreting things: “Your marginal productivity for an hour after eight hours is less than one of your peak hours, but you’re not literally getting less done. There’s a point where you start breaking things and literally going backwards, but it’s not 8-12 hours.” John illustrates this point with a fictional example: “Imagine there’s an asteroid that’s going to crash into Earth and destroy all human life. Do you want Elon Musk and the people working at SpaceX building the interceptor that’s going to deflect the asteroid clocking out at 5pm because they’re going to do worse work if they work another couple hours? This man has his American Bully dog at a park. The dog was sitting in a sit/stay training excercise. He’s had extensive training. He did have a leash on but his owner obviously didn’t have the leash in his hand, part of his continued training. As the owner walks back to him, a gentleman comes up and asks him to please put him on a leash and to hold the leash because there is a lot of distractions at the park. The owner replies “that is part of training.” The owner said “If I thought there was even a small chance he would harm a kid or react the wrong way, I wouldn't put him in that position. This isn't luck. This is hours and hours of real world training, consistency, and building him up around distractions the right way….. Breeds like American Bullies and similar dogs get judged before people even see them work, but this is what they're really about with the right leadership. Loyal, stable, and solid companions.” Some people said the gentleman who approached the owner was putting his own insecurities on a very well mannered dog. He had instant judgement. Others at the park complimented the owner on how well behaved his dog was. What a good boy that dog was. ❤️ Would you be upset if you were at the park with your child and saw this dog sitting there with his owner about 50 yards away? Do you think the owner was irresponsible? Do you think the gentleman had a right to be concerned and a right to remind the owner that there was a lot going on?
