Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

One of the best ever racing games of the golden era - if not the best one: Out Run by Sega will celebrate its 40th birthday this year. In 1986, this game introduced not just one but several new features. It was the first arcade cabinet with a steering wheel featuring force feedback to mimic road surfaces, plus pedals and a gear shift. For a little kid, this was beyond epic. It was also the first to let players choose from three synth-pop tracks (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave) via an in-game radio to personalize the vibe. It simulated real Ferrari Testarossa traits (horsepower, torque, and gears) and allowed skillful drifting - or bad drifting, in my case. Another cool fetaure (a "choose your own adventure" if you will) was the forked road (left/right) at certain intervals, giving the player a choice and making it more "interactive". It's no surprise that this legends ultimately became Sega's top-selling arcade game in 1987 and is still talked about today, in its 40th year.

When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. The transformation animation is one of the highlights of the game, but it’s missing there, so it doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the arcade version.

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. It was only released on the Nintendo 64 in North America, so only NA gamers knew about it. It never came out in Asia, and the region code was different, so there was no way to play it back then. Nowadays, you can run it using EverDrive or code-free mods.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

Moon Patrol by Irem, from 1982 - probably one of the most iconic games of the early 80s. When you walked into an arcade, you could hear this one from a mile away. The music lives rent-free in my head. Moon Patrol was also the very first game that introduced full parallax scrolling - with a whopping 3 levels scrolling at independent rates (sky, mountains, front terrain) - giving it a better sense of "3D".

I’ve been playing games since the ’80s, but the most shocking graphics I ever experienced had to be Daytona USA. Running on Sega’s Model 2 hardware with smooth 60fps and high-resolution visuals — I didn’t know the specs back then, but I could instantly tell it looked on a completely different level from other games. And that iconic “Let’s go away!” from the opening? One line and I’m right back in the arcade. Daytona USA 2 was great too, but somehow I still prefer the original’s unique speed and atmosphere. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. At the time, I assumed it was simply the lower polygon count, but after seeing the original hardware in action, I realized that the difference in resolution also played a huge role. If SNK had the Neo Geo AES, Capcom had the CPS Changer. Both were designed to let people enjoy arcade games at home, but unlike the AES, the CPS Changer wasn’t really built as a traditional home console from the ground up. In many ways, it felt more like an official supergun made by Capcom themselves. It even supported the Super Famicom CPS Fighter stick. A lot of people had the chance to experience MVS hardware thanks to the AES, but the CPS Changer was much rarer, so not many people ever got to see one in person. When you first connect it to a TV, the controller gives off a bit of a Super Famicom vibe, but once the game starts, the polished graphics and incredible sound immediately make it clear that you’re basically playing real arcade hardware at home.
