Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

The #Taliban have turned #Afghanistan into an exhibition of brutality: yesterday flogging, today a public execution in the Khost stadium. A man was gunned down on the orders of #Hibatullah, in front of hundreds of children and teenagers and most shocking of all, the final shot was fired by a boy only 13 years old. This is not justice; it is the manufacturing of a new generation of violence. By involving children in such horrific scenes, the Taliban are destroying the minds and futures of Afghanistan’s youth and pushing society toward perpetual cruelty. A regime that uses children as tools of execution has no connection to law, humanity, or security; it only reproduces violence.

Even in wars, excessive violence often has the opposite effect. In a post of mine not long ago, I warned that the sheer scale of the violence in the assassinations and attacks would eventually end up uniting the country. This is a natural movement in divided societies that suffer an external attack of a level of violence they are not accustomed to. At that moment, they start to believe that the violence coming from outside is greater than the internal one, and they unite despite their political differences. The US isn’t just losing the war, their bases, and the Gulf countries’ faith in American security. They also lost the trust of the Iranian opposition. (Video HissainSharfiei)

It is also a reflection of how desperate our people have become because of a failed economy and failed governance, fuelled by corruption that has become tolerated from the highest office in the land. When laws are routinely ignored, regulations are not enforced and institutions responsible for public safety are weakened, ordinary people ultimately pay the price, sometimes with their lives.
