When Sammy Gyamfi says the venerable J.H Mensah commanded respect from both side of the aisle, this is what he meant. J.H Mensah made a submission on the floor of Parliament as NPP’s Minority Leader. He’s incomparable to Alexander Afenyo Markin’s noise. Mind you, J. H. MENSAH led even...

The comparison sounds nice, but your analysis is far too shallow. J.H. Mensah was undoubtedly one of Ghana's most respected parliamentarians, but you cannot simply compare the number of MPs he led with today's Parliament and conclude that his style was superior because he was quieter. Parliamentary effectiveness is not measured by how loud or quiet a leader is. It is measured by the quality of argument, the ability to scrutinise government, mobilise the minority, shape public debate and, where necessary, confront the majority. And the political context matters. J.H. Mensah operated in a different parliamentary and political environment, with different rules, media dynamics, institutional conventions and political pressures. A Minority Leader today faces a very different political battlefield. You can admire J.H. Mensah's parliamentary stature without pretending that every forceful intervention by a contemporary Minority Leader is "noise". Sometimes opposition politics requires confrontation. If your argument is that Afenyo-Markin lacks J.H. Mensah’s intellectual stature, make that argument properly. But using J.H. Mensah's restraint as a yardstick for parliamentary effectiveness is an oversimplification. Great parliamentarians should be judged by the substance and impact of their interventions, not simply by the volume of their voices.

In all that you said, which of what you’ve put up there was J.H Mensah not doing? But I can tell you for free that, he was not evasive, noisy and theatrical. A leader does not take over the roughly tactics of backbenchers and polish them as his own tools. That is a descend from command to comic from the aisle. That 97-01 Parliament had some of the best brains in there like I’ve enumerated earlier. If noise was necessary or an add up to successful leadership in the house, then J.H Mensah had to opt for that strategy to succeed when he was the arrowhead of the NPP, the thorn that should decompose the flesh of Rawlings govt. Why? You recall NPP boycotted the 1992 parliamentary elections, so the 96 elections happened to be their first in the house. If you had to strategise through noise to make a leeway, then the freshers (NPP MPs) and their leaders had to deplore that path against the Rawlings regime to make a name or frustrate the governance and expose the numbers. It even makes more sense when you put it in a proper context that, it was the first time the Rawlings Government was facing a properly coordinated opposition for which reason, all forms of opposition should have been justified. But noise and loud confrontation was not the bargain. No one buys it for pittance. Afenyo has the precedence at his side but chooses to be him for all nobody knows of. Its despicable!

Senior, you still have not answered the point I made. You keep making a comparison of temperament and presenting it as a comparison of parliamentary effectiveness. In fact, just take your time and reflect on your own historical context. It weakens your argument. If J.H. Mensah could command respect without theatrics, that tells us something about J.H. Mensah’s temperament, intellect and parliamentary stature. It does not establish that confrontation itself is illegitimate, or that a different style of opposition cannot be effective. At the end of the day the real question everyone would ask is what has Afenyo-Markin accomplished through his interventions? Which arguments has he made? Which government decisions has he successfully scrutinised or frustrated? What issues has he forced onto the national agenda? Where has he effectively mobilised his Minority? Those are the things you should use to demonstrate that he falls short of J.H. Mensah but simply calling everything you dislike "noise" does not make it noise in all honesty. And there is an irony in your own description. You call J.H. Mensah the "thorn" in Rawlings’ flesh. But a thorn does not become a thorn merely because it speaks softly. It becomes a thorn because it is effective. The mere fact that J.H. Mensah was quiet, does not make Afenyo-Markin’s confrontational style ineffective and that's the only reason I said your comparison is shallow in my original comment.

JH Mensah’s submission on why Rawlings should be sworn in before would have been termed as a “disruption” as well. Rest!!

What happened at vetting was a noisy confrontation when the clerk was to administer the oath. If that was a submission, in your view, then I’m very sorry. This is surreal.

It tells u that every good thing that has happened to Ghana since colonial days has originated from the NPP tradition. Again, at the time JH was vilified. Few years to come, ndc will quote Afenyo to make a point. So afenyo is doing ok

#WATCH | Delhi | On CJP protest, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says, "When a non-violent protest is taking place, what is the reason for a lathi-charge? Lathi charge is not an act of non-violence. It is an act of violence. I don't understand the logic of this. Similarly here in Parliament, everyone knows these are burning issues across the country. It would be logical to have a discussion on them. Parliament is supposed to be the place where we can ventilate the voice of the people, the concerns of the people. Once we do that, we all know the government has a majority. As the old saying goes, the Opposition must have its say because the government will have its way. They have the majority. But at least let parliament be a forum where these concerns can be heard, can be truly ventilated and voiced, where various people can represent the views of their constituents. Then the government can disagree. But right now, just refusing a discussion is what has led to today's disruption because the opposition wanted these issues up there, wanted an opportunity to talk about them on the floor of the house. If Parliament is not for raising these issues, then honestly, what is it for? I mean, it can't just be a sort of notice board for the government to announce its bills and get them passed with a rubber stamp. That's not what Parliament is all about. It should be a forum where all these views can be heard, discussed, debated as necessary and then passed. The Prime Minister has sought cooperation from the opposition. We'll cooperate if they cooperate. The idea should be that there should be mutual cooperation. Let them permit certain discussions. This has got to be give and take. That's the way Parliament is supposed to function."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2026 TO: Mr. Mohammed Awal, NPP Communications Team SUBJECT: Demand for Retraction and Formal Apology Regarding Derogatory Remarks Against Fans of Shatta Wale We write to express our utmost disappointment and strong condemnation of the derogatory remarks made by Mr. Mohammed Awal, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, during a live discussion on Joy News earlier today. During the broadcast, Mr. Awal labelled the fans of the African Dancehall King, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, as "junkies." We find this statement not only offensive but also a gross misrepresentation of a diverse and vibrant fanbase that spans across all sectors of Ghanaian society including professionals, students, parents, and hardworking citizens Labelling a specific group of citizens with such a stigmatizing term is an act of prejudice that has no place in constructive national discourse. As a communicator for a major political party, Mr. Awal is expected to maintain a level of decorum and respect for all Ghanaians, regardless of their musical preferences or affiliations. One can effectively make a political or social submission without resorting to name calling or the marginalization of a specific demographic. The "Shatta Movement" is a community built on loyalty and passion. To categorize this massive collective as "junkies" is a direct insult to the dignity of millions of Ghanaians. We, therefore, call on Mr. Mohammed Awal to Retract the statement in its entirety. Offer an unqualified apology to Charles Nii Armah Mensah and the entire fanbase for the disrespect shown on a national platform. We believe that public discourse should be characterized by mutual respect. We hope Mr. Awal takes this opportunity to rectify his error and uphold the standards of professional communication expected of his office. SIGNED, Phushket Shatta Bobby SM Fanbase Chairman

All 100 U.S. Senators have approved the Epstein bill through unanimous consent. As CNN’s Manu Raju explained, this wasn’t a normal vote. It was a procedural green light, eliminating delays and skipping a formal roll-call entirely. Raju broke down in detail what comes next: “But now it is on its way to the president’s desk in a remarkable turnaround, in an extremely fast move here, the senate has essentially greenlighted this bill to be approved as soon as tonight and be sent to the president’s desk.” “Now, essentially, what happened was that in the aftermath of this house vote this afternoon, 427 to 1, just one member of the entire United States house voting against it, this is now on its way to the Senate.” “Now, there has not been a formal process that would be formally sent over to the United States Senate. That process would take some time to get through the official writing of…getting the bill over across the capitol.” “It’s an arcane process, but once it gets over to the United States Senate, that’s when the bill can be read in the senate and officially essentially passed.” “So what we just saw moments ago was Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, he went to the floor of the United States Senate, and he said…he asked for what’s known in the Senate as unanimous consent.” “That means that all 100 Senators have to agree, or one Senator could object and slow things down. He asked unanimous consent that for when the Senate receives the final paperwork of the bill that just passed the United States House, that it would be approved by the United States Senate.” “Nobody objected to that, Jake. So what that means is that as soon as it formally transmitted, this bill is formally transmitted from the House to the Senate, the Senate will essentially have it approved.” “It will be approved in their chamber. There does not need to be a roll call vote, and then it will go to the president’s desk for his signature, in which the president has indicated that he will sign.”
