When should road users stop at zebra crossings? 3 motorists failed to slow down or even stop for this zebra crossing which had a child waiting on it to cross. The one cyclist did slow and stop.

Did I fail to give way by moving off when the pedestrian hadn't finished crossing? According to case law, it is fine to continue when you are satirised that the persons on the crossing are out of danger.

In Germany, if you were caught doing what those three motorists did, you'd be luck to still have your driving license after the legal system was done with you. And rightly so, in my opinion.

All should stop. That last one needs reporting

I've got into the habit of putting my foot on the crossing then recording drivers on my phone. Drivers have been penalised. Most jam on the brakes when they see a phone pointing at them. Shouldn't have to do that to ensure higher safety...

It might be a "should" to stop for a pedestrian waiting to cross, but isn't it a "must" to not overtake a vehicle that has already stopped for a pedestrian?

No obligation unless the pedestrian places a foot on the crossing.

Why even pose the question at the end? The Highway Code is clear that they should. Shame it's not a "must" rule, if you ask me.

Yes and the cyclist should not pull away until the pedestrian is off the crossing. Same rules for every road user remember.

Section 19 of the Highway Code (my emphasis): Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2). Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

Terrible driving, but you're also supposed to wait until they have cleared the crossing, especially children who might turn around and walk back.

What states that?
