Republicans: 53 Independents (who caucus with Democrats): 2 Total non-Democrat votes available: 53 + 2 = 55 Assuming all 53 Republicans and 2 independents vote yes, and all 43 Democrats vote no, the bill fails unless at least 5 Democrats switch to yes. Yes, the filibuster can make legislating difficult. But it doesn’t give Senate Republicans an excuse to give up on the SAVE America Act just because there aren’t currently 60 votes for the bill. We should return to it immediately—and stay on it until it passes.
