When we were preparing this year’s Easter greeting, we learned that right nearby, also on the grounds of St. Sophia of Kyiv, children of Ukraine’s defenders from Kyiv and the Kyiv region had gathered at the same time – children whose parents, sadly, were killed in this war. An... excursion, an Easter egg-hunting quest, traditional spring and Easter songs, and workshops on making stained glass were organized for them by the Socially Responsible Business Platform “To the Children of Our Defenders,” which brings together entrepreneurs and the state to support children who have lost their parents because of the war. The participants of the platform are always close to the families of defenders – organizing trips, rest, activities, and education, creating important moments of warmth and care. So we joined this moment at St. Sophia and came to wish the children a Happy Easter. The smiles we were greeted with are priceless. We want and must do everything so that the children of those who gave the most precious thing for Ukraine’s security never lose their faith in the world. We invite businesses, entrepreneurs, and all caring people across different regions to join the “To the Children of Our Defenders” Platform, support its initiatives, and launch their own efforts to help the children of defenders. One of the most cynical Russian war crimes is the systematic, calculated transfer of Ukrainian children, scattering them across Russia, concealing their fate, “reprogramming” their culture, and continuously, shamelessly subjecting them to militarization. It is vitally important to bring our children back home from there. Before the Russians break them. And every initiative, every activity, every effort that helps achieve this also helps Ukraine. I said this while addressing participants of the Civil Society and Expert Day. Thanks to our Bring Kids Back UA initiative, we have secured 2,126 returns, and we will continue this work. We have engaged strong international mediators to help bring the children home. I am grateful to every country that has joined our Coalition for the Return of Children. I want to thank every leader of the countries contributing to the effort, and every First Lady of countries that care and are concerned about the fate of abducted children. I thank our Bring Kids Back team. I am grateful to all diplomats, international organizations, and journalists who maintain focus on the rescue of children.

The Global Peace Summit has the potential to bring Ukraine closer to lasting and just peace. One of the most important steps on this path is the return of captives and deportees, including children who were abducted by Russia in the occupied part of Ukraine and taken away from their homeland. Russia is killing, ruining and trying to destroy our future. But we are stronger. We must do everything in our power to ensure that every Ukrainian child is at home, happy, with their family, and safe. I met with President of the National Council of Switzerland @MajaRiniker. I am grateful that this visit includes not only Kyiv but also other regions of our country. This is truly important. We discussed the global situation, cooperation with partners, and Switzerland’s support and assistance. I am thankful for the decision to allocate 5 billion francs for the recovery of our country. We have many promising humanitarian projects that we can implement together with the help of these funds. We also touched upon the issue of abducted children. We hope that Switzerland will join our efforts with partners in a practical way to help bring all the children back home – to Ukraine. Thank you for a good conversation. And thank you to Switzerland for its peacebuilding efforts and its steadfast and consistent support for our people. We deeply appreciate it.

The search and rescue operation at the site of Russia’s strike on a residential building in Kyiv has been completed. Our first responders from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine worked continuously for more than a day. The Russians practically demolished an entire section of the building with their missile. Twenty-four people were killed by this strike, including three children. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Everyone who was wounded or lost their home must receive the necessary assistance. In total, 48 people were wounded in Kyiv as a result of yesterday’s attack, including two children. I thank the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and everyone who dealt with the aftermath of this Russian attack and helped people. A Russia like this can never be normalized – a Russia that deliberately destroys lives and hopes to remain unpunished. Pressure is needed. It is Ukraine that is defending Europe and the world so that such strikes, in which children are killed, do not spread further. That is why support for the defenders of life must continue. Ballistic missile defense is always needed. I thank the partners who continue investing in the PURL initiative and develop our anti-ballistic coalition. All of this must be implemented. I am grateful to everyone who did not remain silent and condemned this savage strike.

We can exchange our warriors and prisoners of other categories. But we cannot exchange children with the Russians, and it’s understandable why. During my meeting with the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pere Joan Pons Sampietro Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, I proposed appointing a special envoy under the OSCE PA President to focus specifically on the return of Ukrainian children. We must bring them back to their families, to their loved ones. And the voice of the OSCE and its parliamentarians is very important. We also touched on another equally important issue – our joint efforts to bring back prisoners of war and civilians illegally held by Russia. I thank the President for understanding the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia. I am grateful for the visit, and we deeply appreciate the Assembly’s support for Ukraine and its readiness to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

I informed the MPs on the diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, the vision for a future security architecture of Ukraine and Europe, and humanitarian efforts to bring our children home. I am grateful to the people of Norway for their assistance to Ukraine and to the Storting for its decision to allocate nearly $8 billion this year. This is truly a significant contribution to strengthening our nation.

Children come home. But many more still need to come home. We must clearly document where the children are, track the full chain of abduction and the cover-up of this crime, bring the children back, and help them find themselves again and return to normal life. None of this is easy. But it is good that our Bring Kids Back UA initiative is working. It is good that you are active – at the level of the European Commission, European institutions, international organizations, and the leadership of every country. And I am especially grateful to the First Ladies who help to secure the release of these children. All of this must continue.
