Whenever I post Pearl Jam, even this fantastic unplugged version Jeremy, the response is underwhelming. Are Pearl Jam not a good band, or am I missing something here?

If you were GenX, you listened to Pearl Jam. "Ten" is a flawless record. Do I love everything the put out afterward? No. But being a senior in high school when this record dropped was a vibe.

Pearl Jam "Ten" and Nirvana "Nevermind" dropped one month apart at the beginning of my senior year. Legitimately changed the music culture overnight. Not like this is a new observation, but everything feels more significant when your 18 lol

@punt_rd I was in school then, too. I can admit that Nirvana is great, even though I have no interest in listening to them, but I just don't get why everyone liked Pearl Jam

@punt_rd Not everyone is into it understood. I was more into Fugazi and Descendents and Sonic Youth, etc at the time but Pearl Jam "Ten" rocked and I wasn't too cool to admit it.

The problem is that Eddie vedder started opening his mouth in ways other than to sing.

Great live band - saw them twice in 92. I think Ten is a 10, all killer - no filler, but they never reached that level of songwriting ever again.

I think it’s more about Vedder’s politics of late. Nobody likes being talked down to when seeing a show. Especially with his crazy BS views.

They’re an incredible band. Their body of work is strong, and it’s completely lost on people that badly needed them to keep making Ten over and over. Their last album, Dark Matter, is their best album in years, and it’s worth a FULL listen.

I once adored this band but was alienated by the leftist mumblings of Vedder, made me completely indifferent and have not paid any attention to them in 20 years

I've seen them at least 30 times, typically from the first few rows. Amazing memories. But TBH, the last tour didn't give me that feeling. The edge was missing. But maybe it's me - too much of a good thing? I still think that given the early age of this band & their genre, this MTV Unplugged performance was nothing short of amazing. It was a shock for fans at the time. Confirmed our thoughts that this band was truly special.

Upon more reflection I realized that Jeremy is actually the villain here. Whiny privileged kid that can’t control his emotions, punched Eddie Vedder in the face and then brought a gun to school

I was living in the Seattle area in 1990-94. I was kinda meh on Pearl Jam. Loved me some Soundgarden, Nirvana, and The Melvins.

Great band. No question.

Pearl Jam was an incredible band, truly phenomenal in their prime. Unfortunately, their increasingly overt political rhetoric ended up overshadowing their music and, in my view, diminished their long term star power and legacy. Rather than positioning themselves as outsiders rebelling against the establishment (like many of their grunge era peers), they ultimately aligned with the mainstream cultural and political machine. It's a shame, because the music deserved to stand on its own. That's just my subjective take, of course. Nonetheless, this video of them (your post) is masterful!

It doesn’t get Eddie Vedder than this. Excellent band. I used to play in a PJ tribute band. Sad that Eddie is the last left of the early grunge kings, and that Kurt, Layne, Chris and others are gone too soon. But yeah, they’re literally one of the greatest rock bands of the 90’s.

Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy were all terrific. After that, no bueno.

No, it’s not you, it’s everyone else. PJ is one of the greats, but the older I get, the more I think you had to be there.

They peaked at Ten, have maybe 5-6 good songs after that. Mother Love Bone was way better - but as a whole I think they are extremely overrated

Meh. I'm a genXer, grew up on 90's Seattle grunge: mudhoney, Alice in chains and basically the entire soundtrack of Singles. Never cared much for either for pearl jam or nirvana. Pearl jam are good. Not much more. Cannot compare Eddie vedder's voice to the almighty Chris Cornell
