the way people in these replies act like choosing death is something you do lightly is so detached from reality. no one picks that path without being out of options.

@chloewigglyp I regret it for a long time actually! it isnโt privileged to decide you simply donโt want to die anymore despite your circumstances. nobody HAS to suffer forever. they just think they do because theyโre so overwhelmed by pain in that moment.

Whenever people talk about euthanasia I see my trapped, broken older brother's animal eyes, all of 18 yrs old, lying there mangled with a broken neck, begging to die.. for NINE MONTHS. I can play this game too. This was before MAID. He had to die and be revived until braindead
okay, niche case but what about literally any other illness and disease? Someone whos a quadriplegic with no quality of life? Someone with stage 4 terminal cancer? A person with a diagnosis of dementia? We cant deny people peace because "maybe a cure will turn up!!!"
itโs not niche though - plenty of people can find hope unexpectedly. I too would have qualified for MAiD years ago & would have done it if I could - now my quality of life is significantly improved. this specific story represents a bigger picture
Some people can find hope, not everyone. The decision to end one's life on your terms is a deeply personal one that everyone should have the right to take just because Maid exists doesn't mean you HAVE to use it, just gives those who need it the option
the personal decision to end oneโs life already exists without suicide being state sanctioned. the only reason Iโve lived this long is because I was prevented from killing myself so death wasnโt an option. had it been, Iโd have died years ago.

@Bethanee_ MAiD doesnโt require a terminal diagnosis. I do have multiple incurable disorders which have caused me immense suffering though which would qualify me for MAiD!

The first person in Canada to be approved for MAID had ALS and ended up never taking it. But she said knowing that the *option* was there gave her the freedom to keep going and live her life in a way she wasn't able too before she won the right to MAID.
I'd wager that 99.99 percent of MAID deaths are old people riddled with cancer. To deny them a death with some dignity because the 00.01% of young people that choose MAID for whatever reason could have had a cure within a decade or something is absurd.
Why do you think this is your choice to make and not for the individual to decide? Provided it's an educated decision, they take the risk, not you.

This made me think of Claire Wineland. She was the only YouTuber I ever truly followed. I still sometimes wonder if, had she lived just one more year, she might have had the chance to benefit from the new CF treatments that came soon after. May she rest in peace ๐

@No_Stress67 How do you want people committing suicide? The only reliable DIY ways are long drops and things like shotguns, so in an anti-gun country (most of them), that's going to mean expecting an 80 year old with terminal illness to toss themselves off a bridge, and let someone clean up.

The main reason I oppose legal euthanasia. It will absolutely kill motivation to develop cures and treatments, and severely hinder any remaining efforts to do so. You want to test a new treatment? Too bad, everyone with that disease kills themselves.

Most people that apply for MAID are in their 70s. 90% qualify for end of life care. MAID is perfectly reasonable policy and its critics are mendacious lunatics.

You do understand that cases like this are rare. If one has terminal cancer the chances of a new effective therapy before the end are practically non existent. One can always hope on a miracle, though they are very few and far apart.

Dumb take. There's always a part where people die just before a cure is developed. That doesnt mean it happens often and sometimes people just can't hang on. Though those who don't suffer really like to let those who do continue on suffering for them.
