whenever people talk about euthanasia I can’t help but remember this youtuber with CF who was coming to terms with fact that she had 3-4 increasingly painful years left to live max then 3 months later a groundbreaking new treatment dropped out of the blue

if she was Canadian, she could have qualified for track 1 MAiD which would have meant dying before she knew help was right around the corner. still alive and doing well 7 years later by the way

the way people in these replies act like choosing death is something you do lightly is so detached from reality. no one picks that path without being out of options.

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

clearly you’ve never been suicidal if you think this! people in extreme pain will *think* they’re out of options, but almost all of us who’ve suffered suicide attempts can attest now that we were wrong

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

@chloewigglyp I regret it for a long time actually! it isn’t privileged to decide you simply don’t want to die anymore despite your circumstances. nobody HAS to suffer forever. they just think they do because they’re so overwhelmed by pain in that moment.

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

@chloewigglyp you actually have no idea what I’ve dealt with. just because someone is more optimistic than you doesn’t mean that they’re privileged or that they’ve suffered less.

Фото профиля jett
jett7 дней назад

@snufftoyfox @chloewigglyp it doesnt mean theyve suffered less but by definition being able to get past it and having this optimism literally is privilege

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖

@snufftoyfox @chloewigglyp no it isn’t. privilege is about the cards you’re dealt, not the way you play them

Whenever people talk about euthanasia I see my trapped, broken older brother's animal eyes, all of 18 yrs old, lying there mangled with a broken neck, begging to die.. for NINE MONTHS. I can play this game too. This was before MAID. He had to die and be revived until braindead

okay, niche case but what about literally any other illness and disease? Someone whos a quadriplegic with no quality of life? Someone with stage 4 terminal cancer? A person with a diagnosis of dementia? We cant deny people peace because "maybe a cure will turn up!!!"

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

it’s not niche though - plenty of people can find hope unexpectedly. I too would have qualified for MAiD years ago & would have done it if I could - now my quality of life is significantly improved. this specific story represents a bigger picture

Фото профиля St Eepy
St Eepy7 дней назад

Some people can find hope, not everyone. The decision to end one's life on your terms is a deeply personal one that everyone should have the right to take just because Maid exists doesn't mean you HAVE to use it, just gives those who need it the option

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

the personal decision to end one’s life already exists without suicide being state sanctioned. the only reason I’ve lived this long is because I was prevented from killing myself so death wasn’t an option. had it been, I’d have died years ago.

@Bethanee_ You don't get to deny others dignity in death because you were once suicidal. That is insanely selfish behaviour.

@Bethanee_ MAiD doesn’t require a terminal diagnosis. I do have multiple incurable disorders which have caused me immense suffering though which would qualify me for MAiD!

The first person in Canada to be approved for MAID had ALS and ended up never taking it. But she said knowing that the *option* was there gave her the freedom to keep going and live her life in a way she wasn't able too before she won the right to MAID.

Фото профиля xtremejmanyo

I'd wager that 99.99 percent of MAID deaths are old people riddled with cancer. To deny them a death with some dignity because the 00.01% of young people that choose MAID for whatever reason could have had a cure within a decade or something is absurd.

Why do you think this is your choice to make and not for the individual to decide? Provided it's an educated decision, they take the risk, not you.

an individual can already decide to take their own lives without it being state sanctioned. this is one of those “educated decisions” you’re defending by the way

This made me think of Claire Wineland. She was the only YouTuber I ever truly followed. I still sometimes wonder if, had she lived just one more year, she might have had the chance to benefit from the new CF treatments that came soon after. May she rest in peace 💐

😢💔 God bless her & those left behind. I’ve heard many stories like this. even within families - eg one sibling with CF died before this drug came out, the other got to receive treatment. hopefully these stories become a thing of the past

@No_Stress67 How do you want people committing suicide? The only reliable DIY ways are long drops and things like shotguns, so in an anti-gun country (most of them), that's going to mean expecting an 80 year old with terminal illness to toss themselves off a bridge, and let someone clean up.

Фото профиля Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖
Cecylia 🇻🇦💐✝️💖7 дней назад

@No_Stress67 well actually I’d prefer that nobody did commit suicide at all! but if someone wants to do it I can’t stop them. that doesn’t mean the state should sanction it just to avoid the mess of clean up though.

@nftomancerart That's legitimately great - no snark. But they'd have to vastly increase to avoid euthanasia. That includes making sure that the care workers get paid decently, as well as resurrecting the research base. You might be all for this; most would not be.

The main reason I oppose legal euthanasia. It will absolutely kill motivation to develop cures and treatments, and severely hinder any remaining efforts to do so. You want to test a new treatment? Too bad, everyone with that disease kills themselves.

Dumb take. There's always a part where people die just before a cure is developed. That doesnt mean it happens often and sometimes people just can't hang on. Though those who don't suffer really like to let those who do continue on suffering for them.

It’s truly bewildering that so many people in the comments immediately resort to the sentiment of “better to be consigned to oblivion than to have some hope”. Why are they so mad about someone giving the gift of hope especially when supplied real world reasons to do so?
