The Scale of India’s Solar Energy Growth PM Narendra Modi underlines how India, the only G20 nation to have met its COP21 commitments ahead of schedule, is steadily building a stronger non-fossil energy base. The scale of the solar journey says a lot: from around 2 GW of solar energy capacity 12 years ago to more than 160 GW today. Through initiatives like PM Surya Ghar, solar power generation is reaching rooftops, while PM-KUSUM is supporting farmers with solar pumps. From One Nation, One Grid to growing wind and hydro capacity and expanding work in nuclear energy, the energy transition is taking shape across sectors. Together, these efforts are changing the energy landscape and strengthening the shift towards cleaner sources. #EnvironmentConference2026 #ClimateAction

“We began this year with the grand celebration of national pride, the Somnath Swabhiman Parv. A thousand years ago, in 1026 AD, Mahmud of Ghazni demolished the Somnath Temple, and the Modhera Sun Temple was also attacked. Yet, those who came to destroy Somnath and erase India’s identity have no existence today, while Somnath stands in all its grandeur. Today, Modhera, India’s first ‘Surya Gram’, carries forward this spirit of resilience and continuity through solar energy.” — Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji in the 138th episode of #MannKiBaat

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has often spoken about India leading from the front. In clean energy, that vision is visible in every ray of progress. In the last 12 years, the Country has witnessed growth in Solar Capacity from 2.82 GW to 150+ GW. It is the story of rooftops lit by the sun, villages, cities and industries drawing cleaner power, and a country growing with greater confidence in its own future. We have seen the rise of domestic solar manufacturing. India’s solar sector shows what happens when ambition is matched with action, and policy becomes progress people can see and feel. Congratulations to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji on this historic milestone. Off-grid solar power is spreading across Brazil’s Amazon, helping remote communities prepare for severe drought while replacing costly, polluting diesel generators. In Nova Sociedade, where residents walked up to 20 kilometers for water during the historic 2024 drought, solar panels now power pumps supplying clean water to 36 families. Advocates say renewable energy can strengthen Indigenous and traditional communities, improve climate resilience and help protect the rainforest.
