While comparing Khamenei 2.0 to his dead father, it’s important to remember that Ali Khamenei rose to power in 1989, at the age of 50, after 25 years of cultivating an image as an unworldly cleric, mainly interested in poetry and philosophy rather than political power. Even his fiercest... critics recognise that Ali Khamenei was a good orator and knew how to read the room. He was a violent, manipulative, and brutal theocrat but knew how to use words, and did that very well in meetings with Revolutionary Guards commanders and hardline clerics in the first years after coming to power to gain their trust. On the other hand, Mojtaba Khamenei has never (NEVER!) given a public speech. In one private video message sent to his students at the seminary, shared on social media and here, Mojtaba has difficulty putting two sentences together and getting to the point. That will pose a problem for him and the regime. In a situation in which the “supreme” leader must live in a bunker for the foreseeable future, he and his regime will have a very difficult time working on his image, earning his followers' trust, and finding new acolytes. The result will be an even more brutal rule than his father’s, with no need to pretend that his rule is legitimate or to reach a consensus with different parts of Iranian society. Mojtaba may have outmanoeuvred his rivals to come to power, but years of operating in the shadow of his father will catch up with him soon. Other than that, a pretty standard Khamenei speech--triumphalism, conspiracy theories, maximalist demands. He even uses the same analogies as his father Ali Khamenei--comparing the Islamic Republic to a mighty tree that can't be uprooted. He cites the ongoing negotiations--and says even if military silence is needed on the battlefield becomes necessary, public participation in the streets is still important. It's a reminder of how his father, when speaking about negotiations, sometimes used a wrestler analogy--"sometimes a wrestler shows flexibility for technical reasons, but he doesn’t forget who his opponent is and what his real goal is."

It's too soon for newly chosen supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei to offer comment on talks with the U.S., Araghchi said in an interview with PBS News Hour's Amna Nawaz (amna) on Monday. But "we have a very bitter experience of talking with the Americans," he said. "We negotiated with them last year, in last June, and they attacked us in the middle of negotiations. A few observations from Khamenei's speech--his first after the historic protests in #Iran last night. (1) This was a classic Khamenei speech. He didn't give an inch. Doubled down. Deflected. He's been marinating for four decades in his ideology and conspiratorial thinking. And he had a front row seat for the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Khamenei believed because the Shah made concessions that contributed to his downfall. Therefore, that is a lesson Khamenei has applied to all rounds of protests, so he will likely hold firm. This is why the Iranian people have concluded the Islamic Republic must go. It can't be reformed. (2) Khamenei delivered the speech from the Imam Khomeini Husseiniyeh in a public setting--which is attached to his office likely to show he is not hiding underground and hasn't fled. It's also why I'm skeptical of reports Khamenei has plans to flee. He will die in Iran, in my assessment, as it's not like he has extensive ties abroad. He's different in that way. Perhaps others around him would flee, but not him.

This is a very big lie. Ali Larijani’s brother, Sadegh Larijani, had no standing with the IRGC or the core power structure because his financial corruption had been publicly exposed. The selection of Mojtaba Khamenei was laid down as early as 2009. Two years ago, Mojtaba also publicly announced the suspension of his fiqh classes and stepped away from clerical positions in order to prepare for power (this is the only short video that exists of him speaking). No one has the ability to compete with the security structure that has been built over the past 37 years. As we have said before, the IRGC oligarchy and the clerical circles in Mashhad and Qom have embedded themselves in the power structure in such a way that it does not fall into the hands of outsiders. This is how it works!
