On the night of September 11th, Congressional leadership held a press conference on the steps of the Capitol to reassure the nation. After they were done speaking and holding a moment of silence, as everyone is shuffling away, someone started singing. In a few seconds, everyone—Republican and Democrat—joins in together to sing "God Bless America." When The Free Press asked me to write about a Great American for their 250th series, I thought of that moment. And then I wrote about Irving Berlin, the man who loved America enough that this was the song our leaders reached for to express their hope in one of our darkest hours. I hope you'll read it 👇

And we stand willing and able to listen to the community and experts to do all that we can.” That was my message today as I joined Governor Greg Abbott and emergency response officials in Kerrville for a briefing and aerial tour of the areas impacted by the recent devastating flooding. While there is a long road to recovery ahead, the State of Texas will continue to provide the support and resources needed for these communities to recover and for every missing person to be found. All of Texas continues to hold the Texans who lost their lives and those impacted by this tragedy in our hearts and in our prayers.
