While trying to solve ocean plastic pollution, we've had a few unscheduled learning opportunities. Interceptor Trashfence in Guatemala was one of them. Hear it from Guillermo, who was on site when it broke back in 2022. After its failure, we deployed Interceptor 006 and 021, which are now successfully... show more

We made this video a couple of years ago and I think it's still the best summary of how ocean plastic pollution works. Key points: - <0.1% of plastic waste actually makes it to the ocean. Ocean plastic pollution is a leakage problem. - 1% of rivers contribute roughly 80% of plastic inflow. - Most of these rivers are in coastal cities in middle-income countries, where people now have enough wealth but no adequate waste collection infrastructure. - High-income countries barely contribute to the problem. OECD countries consume 1/3 of all plastic but are responsible for <0.5% of ocean inflow. If you live in a rich country and don’t litter, your contribution to the problem is basically 0. - Nearshore and offshore plastic pollution are very different. Nearshore plastic pollution mostly originates from rivers and is not very persistent; after leaving river mouths, plastic tends to drift around for weeks to months before washing up on a coastline. Plastic in the offshore gyres mostly originates from the fishing industry and is very persistent; it is trapped indefinitely because there are hardly any coastlines in these currents to ‘catch’ this waste. This is why our catch from our Interceptors and our ocean cleanup system looks totally different.

121 truckloads of trash won’t end up in the Caribbean Sea, thanks to Interceptor 006. The trash we find in rivers such as Las Vacas consists of lighter, softer plastics such as bottles, single-use containers, and packaging, alongside a portion of glass, metal, sand, and organics. Together with partners, we work on identifying appropriate destinations for each waste stream. For instance, some of the PET bottles we sorted from previous catches in Guatemala were used to create a limited edition LP in partnership with Coldplay.

Pathans are nothing but tigers on paper and in their own delusional minds. It was a Panjabis who saved Pathans from Soviet Union. It was a Panjabis who broke the invincibility of the Soviet Army. It was a Panjabi and his war which HE won, not pathans!

A Romanian first. A company from Cluj-Napoca, Romania downed a Geran 2 replica, flying at 160km/h during a NATO exercise in Latvia, 2 weeks ago. This is the interception video. The impact was purely kinetical and no explosives were loaded on the interceptor, which requires big precision from the pilot. The Geran 2 replica lost its propellers and crashed after the impact. It may sound common for Ukrainian and a few other international drone producers but for us in Romania is a premiere and we are very proud of it. Glory to Romania! Slava Ukraini!
