While we're best known for our work with elephants, our Orphans' Project extends to all manner of species. This is especially true at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Tsavo, where an unlikely family has taken shape. There’s Twiggy the giraffe, who has appointed herself the unofficial nanny of the... herd and likes to keep tabs on everyone, both human and animal. Bombi the zebra likes to 'supervise' veterinary operations at the airstrip, and Bibi the buffalo is growing up alongside them, learning the rhythms of the bush. Antelope of all sizes are cared for by Keeper Peter, and then there's Chamboi, our quirky young black rhino who arrived as a newborn. He lets out high-pitched squeaks when his milk is being prepared, an uncharacteristic but unmistakable rhino sound that means 'hurry up!' Each of these orphans arrived in need of round-the-clock care, specialist milk formula, and the unwavering dedication of their Keepers. When they are ready, each will live independently in the wild spaces that lie beyond Kaluku. Our Kaluku orphans know how to enjoy an afternoon rest! Over the years, this special haven has welcomed a variety of orphans, from antelopes and rhinos to ostriches and elephants. Since 2018, Kaluku has become a sanctuary for the tiniest and most vulnerable neonate elephants. From fragile to flourishing — it’s hard to believe how far Toto has come. When he was rescued - brought to us in Ithumba by some of our ex-orphans! - Toto was frightened and alone. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. This #TransformationTuesday, we celebrate Toto’s journey and the incredible support that helped make it possible. Be part of his story:

Twiggy — the tallest member of our herd — sets her own daily itinerary, but more often than not it involves joining Chamboi the rhino, and then Mwinzi, Toto, Natibu, and Korbessa the elephants, for their respective mud baths, and she'll always find time in her day to socialise with the many other orphans in Kaluku too, such as Mr Bean, Bibi, Bombi and the ostriches. Twiggy has really taken the ostrich twins under her wing! Our lovely, leggy giraffe is a great friend to all the orphans, but she has been going out of her way to spend time with Bam and Boozle. Seeing how comfortable Boozle is resting in her presence here, the feeling is clearly mutual. Twiggy and Boozle are two members of our eclectic, beloved orphan herd. While we are best known for raising orphaned elephants and rhinos, we offer a family and a wild future to any creature in need. Meet Twiggy – Kaluku’s kind-hearted ‘security guard’. Twiggy was rescued from Tsavo East National Park as an infant after she tried to pass herself off as a zebra, tagging along with a passing herd. With no sign of her mother, lions nearby and dusk approaching, we leapt into action in a daring rescue to save the lone giraffe. Now at our Kaluku Nursery, Twiggy has settled beautifully amongst the eclectic herd of orphans who are growing up here. Her gentle nature and towering presence make her the perfect guardian to smaller orphans like Bean the warthog, and she takes the role seriously; always the first to notify the Keepers of any potential threats in the area. Kaikai just turned one. She's our youngest orphan elephant at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo – and still learning a lot about her wild world. The first year of an orphan's life is the hardest. Up to 24 litres of milk a day, every three hours, day and night – round-the-clock Keeper care for years. Kaikai has another decade of that road ahead before she's ready to return to the wild. The milk that keeps Kaikai alive is not straightforward. Elephant milk is uniquely complex – it took our founder, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, decades of trial, loss, and learning to develop a formula that kept these tiny infant orphans alive. Kaikai arrived at Kaluku in May 2025, barely weeks old. Every bottle since then has been mixed based on the knowledge Daphne gained. Every feed, every three hours, around the clock. And because of that, she is thriving – opinionated, and full of life. If you'd like to be part of our work to raise orphaned elephants, our wishlist is where to start:

A full house at the mud bath! Mr Bean, Bombi, Bibi, and Gruff joined Chamboi for his afternoon wallow. Gruff even had a face-to-face moment with the big black rhino! This is Chamboi’s appointed time for a mud bath, but in the spirit of friendship, many of the other orphans often gather in. Best known for rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants and rhinos, we offer a home to any wild animal who has lost their family. We nurture them for as long as they need us, then reintegrate them into a protected habitat, where they can live wild among their own kind. Learn more about our conservation work:

Naturally wary, they find comfort and safety by bonding closely with their Keepers - who wear special striped coats to mimic the pattern of their lost mothers [zebra foals imprint on their mother’s markings, we use the coat so that young rescues will imprint on it]. It’s a small gesture with a big impact, helping these foals feel secure, loved, and part of a herd once more.

We gave him a quick lift to our Kaluku Unit, where he was ushered into the heart of an eclectic, loving family. Today, Richard fits right in with the buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and elephants who call Kaluku home.
