AI slop is real. Most of it sucks. I’ve been writing newsletters by hand since 2017. It took me a while to get comfortable letting AI into that process. But the system we’ve built at TFTC has changed how I work, so I decided to show the whole thing. I dump links and voice notes into Telegram. Martin researches them, checks my framing, pulls context from nine years of writing and podcast transcripts, and builds the Ghost draft. Then I go through it. I pick the stories. I tighten the argument. I kill bad writing. Nothing gets published unless I approve it. While Martin is working, I can go do something else. That’s it. Not magic. Not “press a button and become a writer.” Just a hell of a lot more leverage. Watch it and tell me if I’m a sellout.

Today, a story nearly became my story. While covering the flooding at Sampah Valley, I went back to the car to drop off some equipment. The water was at knee level, and as I made my way back, I stepped into an open gutter hidden in the floods and fell in. I was trapped for a moment and genuinely panicked. I went from 92 to 98 miles an hour by adjusting my drop. When I used to think about the drop phase in my delivery, I thought I needed to drop as hard as I could into my back leg. So that’s what I did. I dropped in, got into a squat position, and powered myself out of it. That got me to the low to mid nineties. What got me to 96, 97, and 98 was learning to create linear momentum during the drop. I started moving down the mound instead of just dropping straight down. One of the biggest things that helped was dropping into the inside of my back foot. Before, I would drop into the sole of my back foot. That put me in a very vertical shin angle and I’d go straight down. Then I had to push out of it. The simple adjustment I made was dropping into the inside of my back foot. That put me in a position where my shin wasn’t as vertical. It created a force vector that helped me get down the mound and build linear momentum instead of just going straight down. That linear momentum wasn’t powered by me. It was powered by gravity. I was able to use gravity to my advantage and throw harder with less effort.

I had a really uncomfortable experience in a yoga class yesterday, but it took me a while to figure out why: The instructor (caucasian) sang in sanskrit while playing the harmonium. Seeing someone else appreciate and identify with parts of my culture that I felt embarrassed by made me envious. I played the harmonium competitively from ages 7 to 15. I don't think i've shared that about myself with my friends. Maybe because learning to play and competing weren't choices of mine. I felt forced into it because of the culture I was born into. Whereas, this instructor followed her curiosity, travelled to india, and became trained in the classical instrument and now shares what she learned on a weekly basis. It just makes me think about how easy it could be to label something like this as "cultural appropriation" when in reality it stems from envy or dissatisfaction of your own identity.
