After decades of waking up every day to train, prepare, and chase what’s next, today I officially retire from professional basketball. Since 1989, every ounce of effort went into this game, so it’s only right that I dignify my career with the acknowledgment it deserves and all the hard work and dedication that brought me here. But there are weeks where the budget is tight and you make the best choice you can with what you have. And a kielbasa with butter is a hell of a lot better than pulling through a McDonald’s drive thru or grabbing a bag of chips because you convinced yourself you can’t “afford” to eat this way. At 35 I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. 80% of my tumor shows neuroendocrine differentiation. The Ga-68 scan lit up like a Christmas tree, clear proof of high somatostatin receptor expression. The World Health Organization classified this as a distinct subtype back in 2019. American and European guidelines already have specific treatment pathways… but in Spain we still don’t. So I’m being treated as standard breast cancer by default. That gap could cost me access to therapies that science already knows may work for my exact molecular profile. Time is not on my side with metastasis. I can’t wait years for the system to catch up. My oncology team is fighting hard for me within the current protocols, they are not the problem. The guidelines are. Someone asked me today: “I’m doing everything right but I’m not losing weight. Help.” I get this message constantly. And I remember feeling exactly this way. Here’s what nobody tells you: when your metabolism has been broken for years, genuinely broken, not just “a little sluggish,” your body has a repair list. And weight loss is not at the top of it. Before the fat comes off, your body is busy. Cortisol has to regulate. Leptin and ghrelin, your hunger hormones, have to recalibrate. Chronic inflammation has to come down. Your mitochondria have to relearn how to burn fat for fuel instead of running on a constant drip of glucose. Insulin resistance has to reverse. That’s not nothing. That’s a massive internal overhaul happening while you stare at a scale that isn’t moving. For me it was around month four when the weight really started coming off. But the anxiety had already disappeared. My blood sugar had already stabilized. My sleep had already improved. My body was healing. I just couldn’t see it yet. The scale is the last thing to catch up. Not the first. So if you’re doing everything right and the number isn’t moving, don’t quit. You are not broken. Your body is just doing the hard work first. Trust the process. The weight loss comes after the healing. 🥩👑
