I've lived a long time I'm 79 now so I've seen lot's of governments come and go. In my view the best times were when we had a consensus between the main parties that the state was good for running monopolies like water and power and railways where you couldn't have a proper market and the rest was left to private enterprise. What happened then was the coming of Thatcher and the neo liberals who privatised everything and destroyed our manufacturing base by transferring it all to the likes of communist China, removed all controls on the banks which led to the financial collapse. Then the left abandoned the working class and became obsessed with identity politics were people were judged not by their individual character but by what group they belonged to. This is not socialism this is the same ideology that led to countless millions being killed in the death camps in the gulags and in Mao's China. In the UK it's led to the complete perversion of anything decent were ministers can tell you a woman can have a penis and that white people are racist just because of the colour of their skin. Where the forces and civil service and corporations recruit not on ability but on group membership.

You defend everyone by having equal justice for all - common law trial by jury. Our Magna Carta constitution prohibits usury, central banking, forced taxation and emplaces the people as the final arbiter of law. That's how you protect everyone.

The assumption is that selfishness is the obstacle. Self-interest is benign when it's weak & checked. Self-interest is dangerous when it's powerful & unchecked. The rich aren't uniquely selfish, they're uniquely capable of making their selfishness everyone else's problem
