Sooo we’re getting into medieval MMA?

Chessboxing was first coined in the 1979 kung fu film Mystery of Chessboxing made by Joseph Kuo, where it referred to the Chinese variant of chess, xiangqi. In homage to the film, the Wu-Tang Clan brought chessboxing into popular consciousness for the first time in 1993, when they released the song "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'". Also in the 90s, in a French comic book, "Froid Équateur," created by artist Enki Bilal, characters engaged in a sport that alternated between rounds of boxing and chess, a fantastical idea that caught the imagination of many. However, it wasn't until 2003 that this fictional sport leapt into reality. Dutch artist and filmmaker Iepe Rubingh, inspired by Bilal's creation, saw the potential for an actual competitive sport. Rubingh's first real-world match, held in Berlin, laid down the foundational rules and format: alternating rounds of chess and boxing, testing both the mental and physical prowess of the competitors. This blend of intellectual and physical challenge quickly gained popularity, leading to the establishment of the World Chess Boxing Organization in 2003. The organization aimed to formalize rules and promote the sport globally. Chess boxing matches typically consist of six rounds of chess and five rounds of boxing, with a victory achievable either through checkmate, knockout, or judges' decision if neither occurs. The sport has grown internationally, with clubs and competitions sprouting up in cities like London, Moscow, and Los Angeles. Each match is a gripping display of strategic thinking and physical endurance, capturing the imagination of spectators who appreciate both the intellectual and athletic aspects of competition. The rules of chess boxing are quite simple and are as follows: 1. The game is divided into 11 rounds: 6 rounds of chess alternating with 5 rounds of boxing. 2. The chess rounds last 4 minutes and the Boxing rounds last 3 minutes. 3. The chess game is timed at 12 minutes per player, to ensure the game ends. 4. Players must generally have a chess rating of 1800 or higher. 5. Match referees will not allow players to waste time in the chess game.

In some regions of the medieval Holy Roman Empire, couples could settle disputes through a marital duel. The husband had to fight in a hole and with one arm tied. The wife could move around freely but had to carry weighted cloth. Her weapon was typically a bag filled with rocks, whereas the man wielded three clubs. If he touched the edge of the hole during the fight, he would lose one club. The duel ensued if disagreements persisted after a month or two of attempted resolution. Consequences were severe: the husband faced beheading if he lost, while the wife risked being buried alive.

Cute boy! 😂
