🇮🇷🇺🇲 Can a country be sanctioned into submission if it never runs out of neighbors to trade with? That's the question Dimitri Lascaris keeps circling back to, based on three trips inside Iran over the past 14 months. His on-the-ground read cuts against the Washington narrative directly: full store shelves, functioning hospitals, no blackouts, no homelessness he could find. After decades of what's supposedly maximum pressure. Iran borders Turkey, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan, and still moves goods through the Caspian via Russia. Lascaris doesn't see a blockade that can actually close all of that. He's also skeptical the war did what it was supposed to do politically. Protests in 2022 had already pushed Iran's government toward real concessions. Relaxed hijab enforcement, visible on the streets in every city he visited. His read: an external attack didn't destabilize the government, it consolidated it. People who weren't ideologically aligned with Tehran rallied around it anyway, because the alternative looked like national dismemberment. Then there's the coalition question. And Lascaris is far harsher here than most. He calls the Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan pact rhetoric without substance, timed specifically to deter Iran's allies rather than confront Washington or Israel. His closing point is the sharpest: he doesn't see leaders on the other side as strategic actors at all. He walks through Mohammed bin Salman's record, the Khashoggi killing, the Hariri kidnapping, the war in Yemen, as evidence of impulse over calculation, not caution. So if pressure doesn't move Tehran and rationality doesn't move Riyadh, what's actually supposed to end this? Thanks Dimitri Lascaris for being on the show
