Who remembers The Chaos Engine (Bitmap Brothers, 1993)? It was a great steampunk style action game, in typical Bitmap Brothers fashion with excellent graphics and sound. You can play it in single-player mode (the computer will take on the role of the second player) or with a friend in...

Into the Wonderful! Gods (Bitmap Brothers, 1991) scored 90% or higher in every magazine that reviewed it at the time. In retrospect, perhaps a tad bit too high - not because of the graphics or sound, which were brilliant in typical Bitmap Brothers style, but because I always found the controls a little clunky. Like Xenon II, the movement felt somewhat sluggish. In a classic platformer, that small but noticeable issue was the only real downside. What remains is still a great early-90s game, one of the last hurrahs for the Amiga. Bitmap Brothers sure were one of the more badass game developer studios back in the day. Their style was simply iconic.

Anyone remember General Zod? One of the last games of the Bitmap Brothers and also one of their best, in my opinion. Z from 1996 was such a blast. Yes, I know, Command & Conquer was published a year earlier and was more complex (and turned into a massive franchise), but I always felt that Z deserved more credit and got a bit lost in the shuffle. Great graphics, an epic soundtrack, and some fun units (who doesn't love the Psychos?) were sadly still not enough, and despite some excellent reviews, sales numbers were pretty low. Earlier games from the Bitmap Brothers, such as Speedball 2 or Xenon 2, were commercially much more successful. Maybe it was the fact that the RTS genre was already quite saturated (Dune II, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Command & Conquer), and that pushed Z into the offside a bit, who knows. Did you play it back in the day and liked it?

"Yes, sir! Let's get'em. Territory taken." One of the last games of the Bitmap Brothers and also one of their best, in my opinion. Z from 1996 was such a blast, a great game with its own humorous take on the RTS genre. Yes, I know, Command & Conquer was published a year earlier and was more complex (and turned into a massive franchise), but I always felt that Z deserved more credit and is sometimes overlooked. Great graphics, a brilliant soundtrack, and some fun units (who doesn't love the Psychos?), but it was still not enough, and despite some excellent reviews, sales numbers were simply too low. Earlier games from the Bitmap Brothers, such as Speedball 2 or Xenon 2, had lower production costs and sold much better. Z was a big budget project that didn't hit the mark (commercially). Maybe the RTS genre was too saturated at the time with massive hits (Dune II, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Command & Conquer), and that caused a bit of gamers' fatigue? Maybe that pushed Z into the offside a bit, who knows. What's your verdict on this slightly forgotten gem?

Xenon II (1989), by the legendary Bitmap Brothers. Yes, it has a low frame rate. Yes, movement is a tad sluggish. So what? This was (and in many ways still is) a game with the most badass soundtrack and effects ever. Megablast, hell yeah!

Viktor Hovland on the crowds at the Travelers: "It was amazing. Obviously the home crowd was rooting for Scottie, he's the best player in the world, we're in the United States of America, that goes, that's just kind of how it goes. But I thought it was super exciting. The crowds were super respectful and it just really motivated me to play better. Obviously with some Norwegian jerseys out there it brought the vibes, and I think the American crowds thought it was cool as well. I thought it made the event a lot more enjoyable, I think. So, yeah, it was just a blast to play at a great golf tournament, a great golf course, in front of great fans. And, yeah, it was an absolute blast."

This one always fascinated me, despite never managing to finish it: Cadaver (Bitmap Brothers, 1990), an isometric action-adventure with a boatload of traps, puzzles, secret rooms, creatures trying to kill you - while you are seeking the evil necromancer Dianos. I mean, what could go wrong? You can push, pull, manipulate and use objects to gain access to new rooms or secret passages. You find keys, potions, spells and other useful items to go deeper and deeper into Castle Wulf. Cadaver is quite challenging, but one of its strength is the non-linear gameplay; puzzles don't have to be solved in a predefined way. If you are a patient player, able to solve complex puzzles, then this game is for you. For the casual player it's probably a bit much. Graphics are excellent - as always with Bitmaps Brothers games.

Who remembers this classic shooter from 35 years ago? SWIV (or "Silkworm IV" as called by some) from 1991. Graphics and sound effects were excellent for its time. But what I liked the most was that you could toggle through the power ups by shooting at them when they dropped. It added some extra fun and complexity, it allowed you to really improve (or mess up!) your weapons path. The game was considered a spiritual successor to Tecmo's arcade game Silkworm from 1989. The game's heritage is evident from the game design whereby one player pilots a helicopter, and the other an armoured Jeep. SWIV is not an official sequel, as noted by ex-Sales Curve producer Dan Marchant: "SWIV wasn't really a sequel to Silkworm, but it was certainly inspired by it and several other shoot-'em-ups that we had played and loved." If you listen closely to the sound effects, you will definitely hear a resemblance to "Silkworm." Sometimes I would just let the intro run endlessly - the music was simply too good!

If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?

My review of GOALS. At first, the dribbling felt a bit unusual and not quite as responsive as I expected. But the more I played, the more it started to click as I got used to the skill mechanics. By the end, I was scoring some really nice goals, so I can see it getting even better with more game time and improved squad. I really like the defending. Player switching feels great, and I think they've found a good balance with the double man press. It helps when needed but you still have to be active with the player you're controlling W! I also felt like opponents got punished for mistakes. At no point did it feel like the AI was automatically doing all the defending or suffocating the player.. W! I think the anti-possession mechanic to stop time-wasting is a little overkill and imo, a game like this doesn't really need it. The actual in game graphics could be a little better but the menus, concept art, and overall aesthetic are really clean. I love the look of it. The idea of building a 1 of 1 personalised club and having cards that can grow their overall rating is a really cool direction and I can definitely see it working well. There's still room for improvement but it's got a solid foundation to build on. Would I play it again? absolutely.

Kenny Smith says Michael Jordan is the only player who came into the league where his weaknesses when he left the league were his strengths "this is to me what makes him the greatest player in the world...most guys come in with the strength and they get better at it" "his ball handler was good but then it became great...his shot was inconsistent and then it became indefensible" "he's the only player I look at it like that...his post game there was no flaw...I didn't know he'd be that good but I know he was a hard worker"

North & South (Infogrames, 1989) stood out with its wonderfully quirky graphics and audio. The gameplay is pretty straightforward, not highly complex, but nonetheless a total blast. It's the kind of game that pulls you in instantly and refuses to let go. Even the options screen (just seconds into the video) feels alive, packed with funny little animations and playful sound effects that most titles of the era completely ignored. I mean, why put effort into something that's not part of the main game? Well, Infogrames thought differently and made it more memorable. Apparently, the game is a spin-off from the Belgian comic Les Tuniques Bleues (The Bluecoats), which follows the misadventures of two soldiers during the American Civil War - something I had no clue about as a kid when playing this but only learned much later. You can battle the AI solo or, far better, jump into two-player mode and absolutely demolish your friend's cavalry with perfectly timed artillery barrages before they even get close. Brutal... but fun. Pure chaos and laughter guaranteed - and the occasional rage quit. I dug around but couldn’t find solid sales figures or any real indication of how it performed in the States. My guess is it thrived mostly in Europe, which was typical for European-developed games back in the 80s, which rarely broke big in the American market.

Rafa Nadal & Roger Federer were asked how they want to be remembered in a new campaign for Louis Vuitton Rafa: “At the end what will make me feel proud and happy is when I leave this world, if the tournament directors, the people who work at the tournaments, staff, ATP, say good things about who I was on the tour, or who I am as a person more than a tennis player. Because as a tennis player, at the end, we have the titles, we have the achievements and that's how it is. I achieved more than what I ever dreamed of. So for me at the end, the legacy in terms of a human being, after achieving all the things that we achieved, for me is the most important thing.” ❤️ Roger: “I hope if I'm remembered not only as a tennis player, but as a person behind what I gave to the game and what I represented to the game, and it was less about all my Wimbledon victories or whatever it was, that would mean a lot to me. If I can be remembered more as the personality rather than just a player, that would be great. And if I was a good role model for kids, that would make me happy too… And it would be nice, like Rafa said, if the people are happy to see us again. Not like ‘oh no, that guy again,’” 😂 These two. 🥹

Whether or not you agree with this call, it was certainly controversial and haunts me to this day. The refs were letting them play the entire game and we saw missed calls earlier in the game on the Eagles. A lot of folks thought it was a terrible call at that point of the game and during a Super Bowl nonetheless. Completely tainted the outcome.

Exactly 40 years ago today, on February 19, 1986, this classic arcade shooter was released: Ikari Warriors You could play it in single or two-player mode. Commandos Ralf and Clark (or Paul and Vince in the North American version) mow down enemy soldiers, tanks, and helicopters, and blast their way through jungles and rivers to rescue a captive officer. It featured rotary joysticks for 360-degree aiming, limited ammo, power-ups, and the super cool drivable tanks. I played it later on my C64, but the arcade version remains the benchmark. One of the best two-player co-op games of the 80s – always a blast with my brother. I don’t remember how many quarters it took, but maybe that’s for the best…

"Don't play ARC Raiders if you don't enjoy it" "skill issue" "it will divide playerbase" just because I said I would enjoy the game more if there was a separate PvE mode. It's been so fun reading the comments. Just because I want a PvE mode doesn't mean I'm bad at the game or that I don't enjoy it. But why am I bothering, someone will just say "skill issue" and under that someone will make something up that I wasn't even trying to say. I like ARC Raiders, and enjoy it. No, I'm not bad at it. Imagine someone asking for a spec ops game mode for a CoD and people say it will divide the player base, you're bad at it or you don't enjoy it. See you when ARC Raiders fully releases.

Another classic turns 40 this year: Bubble Bobble (Taito), created by Fukio Mitsuji. I played this first at the arcades, then later on my C64 and Amiga. The ports were brilliant and came quite close to the original arcade version. Great in single-player, even better in two-player mode. 99 levels (plus one final boss level), with hidden bonus levels, an iconic soundtrack, the cutest player characters (even the enemies looked adorable), Bubble Bobble was super addictive right from the start. Every so often I walk along my shelves and pick an old game (old as in 35+ years) and give it another go. Some have aged badly. Bubble Bobble is a great example of a timeless game. It's still fun today, especially when you play it with a friend.

Closing in on half a century... The Atari 2600 launched in 1977, and with it the truly epic "Combat" - making it the console's first official game. It was based on Atari’s earlier arcade game Tank (released in 1974). In Combat, you control a tank, biplane, or jet and fight against another player. The gameplay was simple to grasp, yet the skill ceiling was surprisingly high. You had to carefully judge enemy movement, shot trajectories, and your own positioning to avoid getting hit. For a game that’s soon approaching 50 years old, it was remarkably advanced. It remains one of the most iconic games of early gaming history. Younger generations will probably never come across it - and if they did, they’d likely laugh at its primitive graphics. But for those who grew up with it, Combat was one of the best two-player experiences of its era.

Metal Slug 6 was released during the series’ 10th anniversary year. It was also the first Metal Slug game to move beyond the Neo Geo platform and launch on the Atomiswave system. Since it came out during a period when the arcade market was already in decline, not many people seem to remember this title today. While the graphics did improve with the platform change, it doesn’t quite capture the finely crafted pixel art style that made Metal Slug 2 and 3 so memorable. In particular, the high-resolution backgrounds can feel a bit awkward because they don’t always blend naturally with the lower-resolution character sprites. The game also introduced Clark and Ralf as playable characters, along with unique special abilities for each character. A new weapon switching system was added as well, allowing players to carry and swap between two weapons. Another feature I thought was a good idea was Easy Mode, where you start with a Heavy Machine Gun by default, although you can’t access the Final Mission. It felt like a nice addition for more casual players.
