Simon & Garfunkel sang it best back in the 60s. IMO it’s not a song meant to be belted out. The softness of their voices lent a sadness and melancholy that gets lost in the cover versions.

Disturbed and S&G are the only two versions of this.

Draiman’s cover of “Sound of Silence” is like Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” or Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” — a twist on a great song that becomes the new definitive version. Hence all the people post-Disturbed covering his version of the song.

Original is the best. Celtic Thunder’s version is a great remake of the original. Disturbed version interprets the song to a different level, which is more protest and emotional. The others are also good, but not special.

The Disturbed version is already 10 years old?

Everyone after Dusturbed were singing their version of the Disturbed cover.

Everything post the original is a derivative, some poorly done. This work needs two singers to accomplish the correct harmony. And no, disturbed’s excellent musical accompaniment simply does not cut it. Nor do the other dual performer renditions match the original

1981 is not the original. This is the original (1964). And it wins, of course. The pure genius is unmatched.

The crescendo of power from the temper of the original into a mezzo forte of the end that drops to a pianissimo phrase, is the genius of what the Disturbed rendition has sculpted. The others attempts are a weak mimic of that energy.

Simon and Garfunkel the best. Many of the others are angry, not the right vibe for that great song.

The song is famous because of the song itself, AND because of the exceptional performance on the Simon & Garfunkel recording.

With the exception of Pentatonix, Disturbed was the major influence for all that followed. I am not a rocker (opera is my thing), but Disturbed, in my view, was the best rendition of all. Phenomenal.

Nobody has ever, or will ever, sing it as beautifully or evocatively as these two: the man who wrote it and the man who so sweetly harmonized it ...

Depends on my mood — but the only two worth listening to are Simon and Garfunkel and Disturbed.

Loved them all but Celtic Thunder Is my pick.

Side note: David Draiman from Disturbed is also an extremely nice & humble man; known to brings fans onstage at concerts, especially kids.

I love the original and all of Simon and Garfunkel. But Disturbed performed it best. Hands down, it’s not even close.

Disturbed , just about all versions after them try to emulate their style.

This song is not intended to be belted. It’s a softer tonality that has meaning, not to be gruffly screamed. No doubt the original will always surpass.

You left out Princess Poppy, which was clearly the best…
