forget the $699 AI pins. this $8 chip just shattered the barrier for local AI hardware. a developer just forced a 28.9 million-parameter LLM onto a standard ESP32-S3 microcontroller. it costs roughly 8 dollars, runs completely offline, and draws the power of a single LED. conventional wisdom said a model of this size simply would not fit. the chip only has 512 KB of fast SRAM and 16 MB of flash. the breakthrough is architectural. the developer moved the bulk of the embedding table into flash memory and memory-mapped it. the chip only needs to pull about 450 bytes per token, keeping the active working memory inside the fast SRAM. this means you can now embed a capable language model into a physical node for the price of two coffees. and we are already seeing the beginnings of this custom physical hardware. in the video, a creator built a minimalist voice-controlled universal remote using an ESP32. it captures voice and remotely controls the computer over bluetooth LE. he simply says "open chrome and open 20 new tabs", and the custom hardware executes it instantly. we have spent years watching model sizes explode upward. but the true frontier is the opposite direction. when an eight-dollar chip can power offline intelligence and custom physical interfaces, AI becomes local infrastructure rather than a cloud service.

3D Gaussian Splatting for Real-Time Radiance Field Rendering paper page: Radiance Field methods have recently revolutionized novel-view synthesis of scenes captured with multiple photos or videos. However, achieving high visual quality still requires neural networks that are costly to train and render, while recent faster methods inevitably trade off speed for quality. For unbounded and complete scenes (rather than isolated objects) and 1080p resolution rendering, no current method can achieve real-time display rates. We introduce three key elements that allow us to achieve state-of-the-art visual quality while maintaining competitive training times and importantly allow high-quality real-time (>= 30 fps) novel-view synthesis at 1080p resolution. First, starting from sparse points produced during camera calibration, we represent the scene with 3D Gaussians that preserve desirable properties of continuous volumetric radiance fields for scene optimization while avoiding unnecessary computation in empty space; Second, we perform interleaved optimization/density control of the 3D Gaussians, notably optimizing anisotropic covariance to achieve an accurate representation of the scene; Third, we develop a fast visibility-aware rendering algorithm that supports anisotropic splatting and both accelerates training and allows realtime rendering. We demonstrate state-of-the-art visual quality and real-time rendering on several established datasets.

INTRODUCING OCBTW: THE FIRST PANDA-BACKED ASSET A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND 2-WAY NFT NFT SWAP We just deployed a smart contract on Bitcoin that allows you to mint "OCBTW", a limited edition generative art collection by tclow.sats, solely by swapping an Alkane Pandas ⬢ OCBTW has a supply of 200 unique pieces and is inspired by Oyl | Building Alkanes's signature hexagon logo that defines all native Alkane assets (e.g., $DIESEL). It is 100% on-chain generative art using three.js code via HTML ⬢ OCBTW can only be minted by swapping a Panda using the 2:70104 smart contract. After 200 swaps have been completed, on a first-come-first-served basis, the mint will conclude. However, OCBTW can be swapped back to a Panda at any time, freeing up supply for another Panda holder to collect a OCBTW piece from the contract. ⬢ OCBTW is thus backed entirely by Pandas, meaning each piece will never be worth less than a Panda. This is the first time on Bitcoin that an NFT is minted with another NFT. The LACMA has long been a great supporter of initiatives in art and technology. From the original Art and Technology Lab, to more recent exhibitions like Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952–1982, their sustained interest in the development of creative and artistic practices in relation to the rise of computer technology has helped sustain a once controversial yet undeniably fascinating genre of art before it came into public discourse. I am so pleased with the opportunity to highlight an important part of my practice, known as parameterization. By changing one variable in the program, in this case the percentage of pegs to be wrapped by a string, we are able to see how the original artwork, Ringers #962, evolves over the course of 9 frames arranged in a grid. This process is what I call a “parameter sweep” and it’s an honor to present the combined works as the LACMA Iterations. As the artist who coded the algorithm, I had no explicit control over how the artwork would develop, instead relying on randomization and a deep familiarity of the aesthetic form to help guide the output through code.

The era of ultra-high-resolution imaging has arrived. Modern image sensors exceeding 200 MP resolution are common in smartphones, with over 400 MP sensors under development. However, the large number of pixels poses significant challenges for acquisition and processing, especially on edge devices. Which pixels should be acquired, and when, for bandwidth-efficient imaging and perception? We introduce Policy-based Foveated Imaging and Perception, an on-device, real-time, predictive, and task-aware framework that dynamically allocates sensor resolution to prioritize important regions under specific perception objectives.
