Caltech researchers taught a Unitree G1 humanoid robot to run using a single human motion demonstration. They used mathematical optimization to turn that one demonstration into a library of different running movements for the robot to learn from. After training, the G1 reached speeds of up to 3.3 m/s and could run outdoors while avoiding obstacles.

A robot withstood −47°C cold and walked 130,000 steps The company Unitree tested its humanoid robot G1 in a high-altitude area of China’s Xinjiang region. At temperatures as low as −47.5°C, the robot walked across snow a distance equivalent to 130,000 steps. During the experiment, the robot trampled the Olympic rings into the snow — an emblem roughly 186 × 100 meters in size, visible from above. To prevent equipment failure, G1 was dressed in an insulated jacket and gloves.

People still say humanoid robots cannot handle creativity, rhythm, or coordinated motion. Meanwhile, a Unitree humanoid is already playing drums with timing, arm synchronization, balance control, and real time motion planning. Here is why this matters: Goldman Sachs projects the humanoid robot market could reach $38 billion by 2035, with shipments around 1.4 million units. Unitree’s R1 started around $5,600, while its earlier G1 was around $16,000, showing how fast humanoid hardware costs are falling. A drum performance may look like entertainment, but it tests the same foundations robotics needs everywhere: motion control latency balance precision spatial awareness task repetition A robot does not need to become human to start replacing human tasks. It only needs to become good enough. And that line is getting closer every year.

The Unitree G1 is stepping onto the court, demonstrating the ability to sustain multi-shot tennis rallies with human players. A research team from Tsinghua and Peking University developed the LATENT system, which allows the humanoid to return balls traveling at over 15 m/s. By training on "imperfect" motion fragments and applying corrective adjustments, the robot maintains an athletic, human-like style during high-speed play.

NEW OPEN SOURCE ROBOT: A cheap, lightweight, and agile platform for locomotion! Called BRIDGE, it is an open-source humanoid robot platform, hardware plus control system. It is an 88 cm, 12.5 kg humanoid with 21 active degrees of freedom that costs roughly $1,500. Its distinguishing idea is that the body and the controller are designed together through a three-stage data-driven pipeline: - anatomical constraints - kinematic criteria - closed-loop dynamic criteria Hence the morphology itself is optimized to preserve human motion quality when the robot executes. It demonstrates teleoperated locomotion, balance-oriented motion (bending, lunging, extreme balance) and highly dynamic motion including back-flips and expressive sequences. I like that the thesis is designing the body and the controller together, not a controller for a fixed body, which inverts how nearly everyone else works; the robot is usually given, usually a Unitree G1, then train a policy on it. At the end of the day, it is a sub-$2K open-source humanoid that does back-flips, the humanoid analogue of the cheap-arm democratization.

Unitree burned $4M to make their G1 humanoid beat pro drummers in real-time rhythm The result is terrifyingly good, mastering micro-second timing required training neural motor control from scratch. Instead of pre-programmed loops, the robot processes dynamic feedback on the fly to hit exact percussion velocity and timing. Why this physical AI benchmark actually matters: Sub-Millisecond Precision: Real musical rhythm demands instant trajectory adjustments standard actuators fail at. Spatial Dexterity: Maps multi-surface impact points instantly while maintaining acoustic balance.

NVIDIA MotionBricks brings humanoid robots closer to natural, fluid movement The system combines a modular latent generative model with Smart Primitives, packing more than 350,000 motion skills into a single backbone. It runs in real time at up to 15,000 FPS with just 2ms latency. Navigation, object interaction, sitting, jumping, obstacle crossing, and even different movement styles can be composed zero-shot, like reusable motion modules. It is already being used for whole-body control on the Unitree G1 and serves as the motion layer for NVIDIA GR00T Whole-Body Control. What makes this interesting is the move from training individual behaviors toward building a shared library of motion capabilities. If that approach scales, robot movement could become more modular, transferable, and easier to deploy across different tasks and environments.

Humanoid robots can now play tennis in the style of Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic, learned from broadcast footage. AdaPT (Noitom Robotics, Shanghai AI Lab, Dobot, SJTU) extracts professional player motions from TV broadcasts, retargets them to a humanoid, and learns both rallying and serving while preserving each player's distinctive style. The core problem: decoupled planning-and-tracking works in sim but degrades badly on real hardware. Their fix is speed adaptation, training the tracker on randomized execution speeds while the planner learns to adjust motion speed to the incoming ball. Deployed on Unitree G1 and the full-size Dobot Atom. Worth noting on the sensing: the robot has no onboard vision. Ball and robot position both come from external infrastructure, a 35-camera motion-capture arena in the lab. Paper:

Who can say no to a humanoid robot that can actually feel a hug? 🤖 JQ Industries just built a fabric-based electronic skin for Unitree G1 — covering the torso, hands, and feet. This is not about appearance. It’s about giving robots real tactile sensing and pressure feedback. According to the company, the system includes tactile gloves, upper-body skin, and foot sensors. That means the robot can feel contact through its hands, detect pressure across its body, and use foot feedback to adjust balance. This is the missing layer in most humanoids. Vision alone can’t handle physical interaction. Robots need touch to grip safely, react to humans, and stay stable in real-world environments. JQ says its fiber sensors can detect forces as low as 0.01N, handle up to 3500kPa, and bend below 0.1mm radius. The system can also integrate with Isaac Sim, making tactile data usable for training and deployment. Unitree G1 is already built for manipulation and control — this adds the sensing layer it lacked. JQ says it’s now working with multiple humanoid companies, with some systems already shipping at scale. This is what happens when robots stop just seeing the world — and start physically feeling it.

We’ve seen lots of incredible videos of humanoid robots dancing, doing martial arts, running up walls — but these extreme behaviors are usually from individual, highly specialized policies. But now OmniXtreme shows us how to achieve incredible behaviors that push the limits of humanoid motion, by (1) training a flow-based motion generative model, and (2) doing residual RL post-training to handle complex real-world dynamics. Yunshen Wang and Shaohang Zhu join us to talk about their work towards general-purpose high performance humanoid robot control.
