Why are onions getting more expensive in India? 🧅 The answer may begin long before onions reach the market. Nearly 70% of onion seed production depends on honey bees for pollination. But pesticides, monoculture farming and shrinking green spaces are driving bees away — putting future harvests at risk....

Environment destruction is the most selfish thing done by mankind! वैसे प्याज़ का महंगा होना सरकार के लिए हानिकारक है 🙏

The bee connection is the part most people miss - we blame traders for onion prices, but pollination decides seed supply years ahead. Good reminder why every garden needs a pollinator corner.

This guy makes $82,000 a day selling honey. He started at 12 years old with $300 and one beehive. By the time he graduated high school he was doing six figures a year. Now, he owns 30,000 hives and over a billion bees…. and makes $35M/year in revenue. I met with Blake last year. Here's how his biz model works: He has six revenue lines… • Retail • Wholesale • Pollination services • Beekeeping supplies • Food manufacturing • Hot honey Retail and wholesale is the core. He bottles the honey himself and sells it direct to stores and consumers. His facility runs 1,000 jars an hour. One tote of raw honey (about 275 gallons) is worth $15k and takes half a million bees to fill it. Pollination services runs on top of that. Farmers pay him to park his hives on their land so his bees can pollinate their crops. This brings in extra recurring revenue that’s separate from selling honey. Hot honey is one of the fastest growing food trends right now. It’s honey infused with chili pepper - either sweet or spicy. Blake sells them at a premium and in smaller batches. So they have better margins than straight honey and cost less to produce. Beekeeping supplies and food manufacturing round out the rest. Supplies means gear hives, suits, or smokers sold to other beekeepers. Food manufacturing covers other honey-based products that have higher margins than just raw honey. The numbers: • Revenue: $35M/year • Margins: 15% • Employees: 125 • Bee cost: $2M/year (just to keep them alive) • Facility output: 1,000 jars/hour (at $5 wholesale, $9 on the shelf) • Processing facility cost: $3M to build ($1M of honey sitting in it at any given time) One of the coolest businesses I've seen.

Every time I speak or listen to Shashi Kumar from Akshayakalpa Organic, I learn something new about food, health, and sustainability. A few things I learned recently: 1. Antibiotic resistance is a global health threat. Due to overuse, germs have become resistant to antibiotics, leading to health complications and deaths. The non-obvious way in which we ingest antibiotics is through dairy and meat. For example, cows that are always tied down tend to catch diseases quickly, and the use of antibiotics becomes necessary to treat them. If a cow is treated with antibiotics, 40% of it shows up in the milk. 2. Death of bees Bees are excellent pollinators, and beekeeping on AK farms has considerably increased coconut yields. Unfortunately, most bee colonies die due to the use of pesticides, habitat loss, and parasites. 3. Loss of organic carbon Organic carbon in soil has dropped to an alarming low of 1%. It needs to be much higher for sustainable farming. The lower the organic carbon content, the lower the fertility of the soil, and the lower the nutrition profile of the produce. An orange from 50 years ago had a much better nutrition profile than today's. For example, one orange from then is better than three oranges today. One way to increase the organic carbon in the soil is to move to more sustainable practices when farming, i.e., organic farming. But today, subsidies on fertilizers and seeds make organic more expensive. Also, consumer support doesn’t exist; maybe if consumers cared about the nutrition profile of what we consume, there would be more demand for organic, and at scale, the price could also drop. AK farms are at 3.6%, took 13 years. We have to change this trend. Maybe it will if younger and more educated folks take up farming and such conversations become mainstream. Farmers definitely need to be able to keep higher margins on their produce and need easy access to credit. AK is trying to solve some of these issues. Akshayakalpa Organic is one of our most exciting partnerships through Rainmatter by Zerodha. Watch this conversation (full conversation on the Rainmatter foundation Youtube channel), where Shashi talks about food, farming, and much more.

#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: When asked about how 3:15 PM cutoffs and closing auction price spreads are disrupting his algorithmic hedging and intraday risk management, with Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) confirming Closing Auction Session (CAS) is permanent, Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities, says, "...If we go through with the CAS-related issues which are giving some kind of uneasiness for option traders... this time option traders, they are mainly affected. The reason is that between this time gap, the prices change a lot, and because of that, most of the time on the day of expiry, especially on the day of expiry, it actually impacts option traders, those who are like writers. Broadly, we are of the view that at present SEBI is holding a lot of meetings with brokers, traders, algo traders, and they are designing their framework... they are ready to make changes as per the difficulties which traders are facing... broadly, I am of the view that it may take some time, but in the next maybe 1-2 months, definitely something will come out concrete, and based on that, again, we can see normalisation in the market... till then, option traders, especially writers or those who are using algorithms, they are trying to stay away from the market because of which volatility has also come down sharply in the market. You can see the market is falling gradually, but at the same time, intraday volatility is very low. Even if we consider Volatility Index (VIX), India's VIX index, that is also close to 11 or maybe 11.5 sort of levels, which is the lowest... it means that option traders are not active in this market. That is why I am of the view that it will take some time to come to normalcy. But eventually, definitely, we will come out with something that will help traders, option traders, I mean to say, in terms of managing their risk. It's not that they can increase their volume and all because our government is primarily focusing on controlling this particular speculative activity... they are trying to control that, and maybe because of that, I think they will come out with something which is very balanced."
