COTONOU, in BENIN REPUBLIC, is one of my favorite relaxation destinations in Africa. Its proximity to LAGOS, NIGERIA, gives me the impetus to visit at the slightest opportunity. It was through COTONOU I escaped into exile on JULY 25, 1995. This city provided me the opportunity to start OVATION magazine in French in 2006. The icing on the cake was the honorary Doctorate degree I bagged from the HOUDEGBE NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, COTONOU, also in 2006... I recently visited COTONOU and was amazed at the extraordinary transformation of a place that used to be quiet and laid back. Most of my friends attributed the spectacular transfiguration, to the excellent efforts of PRESIDENT PATRICE TALON. This was what encouraged me to resume my usual road trips to GHANA. The coup scare of earlier today was a bad one. I pray for the good people of BENIN, the land of Angelique Kidjo who Ovation splashed on its cover about 28 years ago. I pray that the military will calm down in West Africa and allow the political leaders to exchange batons Constitutionally, by guaranteeing free and fear elections, and not free for all rigging. The man who spare headed the first coup happened to be my friend and my Roommate (Chukwuma Nzeogwu) He told me they were doing exercise, he never told me the exercise they were doing was for a coup. I woke up and I didn’t see anybody so I went to the mess where we eat. I got there and I saw the stewards all in fatigue dress, I asked what happened and they told me Premier & brigade commander are both dead. I went to the brigade headquarters to inquire more about their death. they told me my friend is in the brigade commander office, I went there and saw him wounded. The coup leaders had issues on deciding whom to kll and whom to spare. So, they decided that, they should go with the flow. Ahmadu Bello was killed by Nzeogwu and three other northern soldiers. However, several deaths were not planned. Interestingly, it was the foot soldiers that carried out most of the massacres. And these were northerners. Because, then, the high ranks were overwhelmed by southerners, because they were more educated than the Northerners. The coup held in the three regions. The Northern, The Eastern, The Western (Ibadan) and the FCT (Lagos). With the sole objective of releasing Obafemi Awolowo and making him the Prime Minister. Much like their neighbours in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the people of Benin spontaneously took to the streets in celebration. However, their joy was short-lived. Within hours, Nigeria — Benin's much larger eastern neighbour — began launching airstrikes on the capital, Cotonou, in explicit coordination with France, Benin's former coloniser. The rest of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) quickly rallied behind the Talon regime. This emerging anti-imperialist rebellion was swiftly crushed, and Cotonou remains under indefinite foreign occupation. In an interview, Nigerian journalist and founder of West Africa Weekly, David Hundeyin, spoke with Ahmed Kaballo of Sovereign Media about these shocking developments. Hundeyin drew a stark contrast between ECOWAS' indifferent response to the self-coup by Western-backed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in Guinea-Bissau less than two weeks earlier. He noted that a successful anti-imperialist uprising in Benin would have provided the landlocked AES with a crucial connection to the Atlantic Ocean. Lastly, Hundeyin reflected on the serious implications of these events for Nigeria's domestic politics and international standing.
