I think it could be the creams being rubbed on the stomach to help with the itching as the stretch marks spread. Also any sort of body cream can’t be rubbed on the stomach during pregnancy, for the infants safety.

It's hormones. Pregnancy ramps up melanin production and the belly stretches, so the skin there darkens. It's called linea nigra when it's the line down the middle. Usually fades after birth.
