The grandmother hypothesis might explain why women live long after menopause. Chris Williamson says human kids are so helpless that we needed extra caregivers. Grandmothers stepping in to help raise the next generation was key to our survival as a species. That’s why multi-generational living was the norm for most of human history, and why moving away at 18 is such a new (and isolating) idea.
