Why does Oracle own JavaScript™?!

The truth is that a trademark loses potency when it goes undefended. So, while Oracle technically could sue over the use of their trademark, they have a long enough history of not caring about public use that the case would likely go nowhere.

IP attorney here... There's no formal disclaimer for common law trademark -- it's a creature of state courts. A public statement to abandon is probably effectual, but who knows. Abandoning their federal trademark doesn't close the deal. That said, most people think that trademarks provide a lot more protection than they really do. I can't imagine a suit that wouldn't find the trademark abandoned for non-use/enforcement already.

That’s a big promise there @wesbos. I sure hope you have to keep it. 😏

@wesbos Can't stop making fun of Java developers. That's a promise you couldn't keep 😜

@wesbos 🤯 I wonder if Oracle contributes to the JS ecosystem somehow 🤔

I just signed

We should just call it JS. Connection to Java is just symantical anyway.

Everything was good until you said you’ll stop making fun of Java developers… Now that’s too far!
