Why Human-Computer Interaction Is Shifting From Screens to Voice “Google and ChatGPT both won because of a very simple interface: a text box and a button. The even simpler version is just having a conversation. I say something, and I hear something in response. Soon, people are going to...

That's why I'm building this!

the interface wasn't why they won. every search engine had the same box. google won on result quality, chatgpt on the model. the box stayed simple because the thing behind it got good. voice is simpler to speak and worse to scan. text you skim and set your own pace.

Voice is hard to get right, things get lost in translation, user intent is sometimes only half baked in, it's not a clear cut input mechanism compared to static UI where we direct the intention, with voice due to it's nature it's not as clear cut.

Voice removes interface friction but makes review and correction harder. What is the equivalent of a visible diff when an assistant acts through conversation?

One request: please wear earbuds! Inevitably there’s going to be a large subset of people that insist on walking around with their phones e speakers on full blast chatting with bots.

Seamless transition from voice to text and back is the way - not quite there yet.

Definitely. We believe augmented reality will be the future interface that voice conversations happen with AI for an immersive experience.

the real friction isn't typing, it's waiting for the ai to stop hallucinating mid-sentence. voice just makes

text boxes won but they're still just a crutch for bad ux. voice is the real endgame once latency and accuracy stop sucking.

Voice is great for quick capture. Rubbish for comparing options or checking numbers. I still want a screen when trust matters.

Great topic indeed! It impacts the entire marketing, monetization, and sales. Things are changing fast, too fast...

The bigger shift is from navigating interfaces to expressing intent. Voice is just the first step — the real change is not needing to think about which app or screen to use.

Kids learn with their eyes, ears, hands and whole body at once. A picture, a story you hear, and something you can touch all stick in different ways. Talking to a computer is only one of those. If we stopped using screens, maps, games and drawings, lots of people would find it harder to understand and remember things. Voices are great, but our brains like a mix. That’s why screens won’t just disappear. @elonmusk

This debate of screen VS voice is just stupid, we should use the best interface for the task, that's it.

James Fishback says Byron Donalds is LYING about data centers! Says this has nothing to do with China and it’s all about GREED. “There are 4,200 data centers in the United States. There are 470 in China. We've already won the AI war. My grandfather was a computer science major at Florida Atlantic University about 30 minutes south of here in Boca. And he would tell you that in the 1970s and 80s, computers were the size of Costco warehouses and now those same computers fit in our pocket. Why are we building an AI data center that in five years is going to be obsolete, is going to be one one hundredth of the size. And so I fear it's because a lot of the big land developers want to buy up cheap land, flip it for the next AI data center. So it's a greedy thing. It's a greed thing. And I don't want that to happen in our state because you know what? If you buy something and you screw up, you can return it. You could sell it. If you pave over citrus groves or the Everglades or a wetlands to build the data center, you cannot easily undo that. And so I don't want our farmers, I don't want our rural towns to be run roughshod over. My opponent, Byron Donalds, will say, well, what about the AI data center? Don't they have property rights? And I would say to him, what about the property rights of the people who live a hundred feet from the data center? Where there is EMF, where there is audible noise pollution, where there is the potential even for small radioactive waves? What happens in that case? Do they not have property rights? They don't have to live next to something like that.”
