It's not about who can read/maintain the code, it's about the effort. Readable code requires less effort for a programmer, no matter how skilled.

Maybe I am just too low iq to understand terse code just by the syntax. I like the code aesthetics idea of code that explains itself even without comments by using descriptive names.

I get the impression you believe that these development skills are linear. This is not the case, as codebases live in a multi-dimensional lossy conceptual spaces. When new developers arrive, it's valuable to ensure that there is a diverse array of conceptual entrypoints for them.

I get the impression that you don't mind that I spent last night with your mother. She was really impressed by my non-linear development skills. We explored the entire diverse array of conceptual entrypoints in a multi-dimensional lossy space.

The problem with this is that you end up with developers who think they're smart/genius who end up writing sloppy code. The best programmers I know end up writing code that's readable / maintainable for all developers. Not just 'smart' ones.
