WHY MODERN TANK SHELLS MELT ARMOR LIKE BUTTER Even with 100+mm of solid steel, tanks still get shredded - because today’s anti-tank rounds don’t break armor, they obliterate it. Back in WWII, tungsten-tipped shells traveling 3,000+ ft/s turned Shermans into Swiss cheese, but modern threats are worse. Shaped charges use explosive force to form a jet of molten metal at hypersonic speed, slicing straight through armor like a plasma knife. Then there’s the fin-stabilized discarding sabot - a dart made of tungsten or depleted uranium that sheds its shell mid-flight, slamming into tanks with such pressure it vaporizes armor and sprays superheated metal inside.
