Why on earth would an EV need a feature like this to eject its battery lol

Thats for if you crash on a city street and your car catches fire. You eject the battery (effectively a bomb) towards the sidewalk to explode pedestrians and maximize your damage

I assume it’s in case of a battery fire.

Unless you're using a crap battery, the odds of a battery fire are much lower than an ICE fire. Doesn't seem worth it to go through the engineering of all this, let alone the safety hazard of shooting that thing out the side lol.

@DoctorJack16 @grok is it true? Had there been any battery fire with Tesla or top brands?

Grok's profile picture

Yes, there have been rare battery fire incidents with Tesla and other top EV brands like Chevrolet (Bolt recalls) and Hyundai (Kona fires). However, data from sources like AutoinsuranceEZ and NFPA show EV fire rates are lower than gas vehicles (e.g., 25 fires per 100k EVs vs. 1,500+ for gas). Always verify with latest reports.

@ammar__mani @SawyerMerritt @DoctorJack16 Would this not be skewed based on legacy vehicles since gas still makes up a large portion of the vehicles on the road? @grok

Yes, that's a valid point—EVs are generally newer, while many gas vehicles are older "legacy" models with potentially higher fire risks due to age and wear. Stats like 25 fires per 100k EVs vs. 1,530 for gas (from AutoinsuranceEZ) are per-vehicle rates, but not always age-adjusted. Swedish data shows gas/diesel 29x more likely than EVs even so. As EVs age, we'll get clearer comparisons—monitor sources like NFPA for updates.

Lithium battery fires are extremely dangerous and hard to extinguish, burning over 1000 degrees. So I can understand wanting to get it away from your vehicle. However, ejecting it under the cars around you or toward people on sidewalks doesn’t seem like the smartest of solutions.

imagine just getting hit with that lol

So you can kill the LOSER in a Honda Civic headed to work next to you when a lithium fire breaks out in your chinese shitwagon in the middle of morning traffic

For the same reason that Star Trek starships eject their warp core.

For the same reason, you would eject your 20-gallon, highly flammable plastic gas tank. Oh wait!

Imagine stopping next to that car and it eject the on-fire battery under your car… And somehow you drive the same car, now it eject another on-fire battery to the next one.. and it keeps going. 😂

They have a lot more problems with EV battery fires in China with low-quality manufacturing. So this must be a fire safety thing to isolate the battery and I guess save trapped passengers.

Alexander Kristensen's profile picture

Yeah, and if you crash so bad that the battery would catch fire, the mechanism that ejects the battery would most likely also be damaged.

Maybe you’re not familiar with the statistics? Did you know more people die every minute from EV battery fires than ICE crashes each year?

It's actually genius and solves charge time issues for long drives. Imagine you roll up to a gas station. Drive on the rack. eject old battery, insert new one and your good to go. No waiting an hour or 2 to charge any more.

In case you crash. To stop the car catching fire. Ok, so you break someone else’s legs, but you are a selfish cnut if you drive an EV, so why would you care? RE

Its China. Maybe so the police can eject your battery if they want to stop you?

That’s bloody ridiculous. See how many people you can take out with the battery pack before lighting them all on fire.

When exceeding maximum warp, sometimes you have to eject the cores to keep from blowing up.

This is an excellent example of why Tesla often takes "long" to release products. Tesla/SpaceX focuses on the end result. Releasing half-baked products leads to perpetual "bugfix hell." Optimus will follow this approach. Others may release sooner but remain stuck, like Waymo.
