Methane is the one rocket fuel you can make on Mars from local stuff: CO2 from the air plus hydrogen from ice, run through the Sabatier reaction. Shipping return fuel from Earth would eat most of the payload.

Methane from Martian CO2 and water ice through the Sabatier process. Picking a fuel you can make at the destination solves half the return trip problem.

co2 from the air + water ice = methane and oxygen on site. no refuel on mars, no ride home

Love these explainers

Mars is a planet which already contains methane. Smart move from Musk.

Mine uses a much lighter fuel that can also be farmed on mars, without refuels exploding in space.

Farzad Bot is annoying...kill it

Lovely video.

Litty.

I think the plan for a trip to Mars should involve two different types of spacecraft: an internal craft to fly between the planet's surface and Earth's (LEO), and a larger, more advanced external craft to travel from Earth's LEO to Mars' LEO, 🐝

Never going to happen with humans. At best, Optimus.

👏

Picking a fuel you can make on Mars is an underrated design call. It turns a one-way trip into a supply chain problem, and those are solvable.

Mine also makes fuel on mars. And on earth. My fuel weighs less.
