Why the Amazon river has no bridges

That's not quite right, bridge in the City Manaus

Map of the Amazon Basin

There has been an impressive bridge of 3.6km in length across the Rio Negro, a major Amazon tributary, since 2011, near the city of Manaus, capital of Amazonas. City is generally considered to lie on the banks of the Amazon river & joins the river Solimoes a few km further down.

What if the United States 🇺🇸, Canada 🇨🇦 and Mexico 🇲🇽 became one country:

The Amazon’s vast length, width during floods, and the surrounding dense rainforests indeed make bridge construction challenging. The low population density and reliance on ferries or detours further explain why no bridges span the main stem. However, it’s worth noting that the Rio Negro Bridge, completed in 2011, does cross a major tributary near Manaus, facilitating regional traffic. Also, the "Hamza River" mentioned is more accurately described as slow groundwater flow rather than a traditional river, identified through seismic imaging in 2011. Great visual explanation nonetheless!

What is the Rio Negro Bridge

You sure?

That is if you don't count the Rio Negro Bridge at the Amazon's confluence.

For the same reason the Spaniards gave the Amazon to Portugal . No matter what you do The Amazon swallow !

Mind-blowing! Nature's ultimate "no entry" sign – the Amazon stays wild and unbridged. 🌿🌊 Fascinating video!

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? The Amazon River has almost no bridges—not because it’s impossible, but because the river shifts its course, floods into a giant inland sea, and flows through vast jungle with no major cities to connect. Nature didn’t need bridges here. 🌍🌊

Five stars. Excellent note w/ map. Thanks

Wrong! There are no bridges over the Amazon "before" it reaches Manaus. They talked about it a lot during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

@2white_jets 🍀🍀🍀

Umm because if the drug trafficking went across bridges they could be seen. Since the whole Amazon forest is filled with drug cartels, they have to look out for their own self-interest

The Amazon's lack of bridges is partly due to the Hamza River, a vast underground water flow discovered in 2011, which destabilizes the soil and complicates construction efforts across its basin.

Ferry’s 😂

Rio Negro Bridge crosses Rio Negro in Amazon Basin

The Atchafalaya bridge maybe a good way to feel what an Amazon bridge could be like

Amazon has no bridges. Amazon needs no bridges.

Porque diachos alguém iria querer cruzar onde não existe nada além de floresta? Tá faltando assunto no teu próprio país?

Ha, he said ferries!

Because it’s fucking wide and huge as fuck and the soil is improper.

I'm sure there's one that was built. I remember it came up in a pub quiz and caused a stir

They just didn’t wanna do it

De 5km a 50km de largura, muito instável para ponte...

@FernandoGuida 😯

I want to try placing an Amazon order from the Amazon River someday 😌

Interesting fact: when it’s midnight on Dec 31 in Samoa, it’s still Dec 30 in American Samoa. Celebrate New Year’s in Samoa, hop on a 30–45 min flight, and ring in the New Year all over again, literally living the same New Year twice!

I’m just amazed South America didn’t split apart by the river running partially through it. Why not have it go the entire length of the land?

You Forgot to talk about Peru. (Amazon River starts in Peru). And in Peru there is the Nanay Bridge (2.2 Kilometers) over Nanay River an affluent and part of the Amazon River. You can google “Puente Nanay”.

Wow
