Hooray! We don’t have to struggle anymore. We’ve made it. We made it to the top. We’ve achieved these liberal democratic societies, which are the best societies in the world. We succeeded. We have made it. The rest of you, the rest of the world, you’re going to struggle. We don’t have to struggle. And one statistic that I’m surprised that so few in the West are aware of is that the West only makes up 12% of the world’s population. Twelve percent. Eighty-eight percent lives outside the West. And the West crazily assumed at that moment of history, when it reached the end of history, that the rest of the world would come and become replicas of the West. Copy you. Follow you. And become like you. I’m sure you’ll all agree that that’s a somewhat arrogant assumption on the part of the West. But that arrogance dominated the worldview of all the Western intellectuals at that time. I know it so well because, by an accident of history, I spent a year in Harvard in ’91–’92. Everyone is calling out Tom Cotton for being racist and ignorant in calling out the CEO of TikTok for potentially being China. But all of the arguments I've seen miss an importance underlying point. Cotton has been to Singapore and likely knew Shou Zi Chew was Singaporean. Cotton was trying to normalize having to distance oneself from China and the CPC. Given around 90% of Chinese people support the CPC in China, this is dangerous. People shouldn't have to prove they are not associating with China or the CPC. Every president of the US and the leaders of every major international company maintain close ties with business partners in China and with leaders in the CPC. We can not let Tom Cotton normalize not having good relations with China and the Communist Party of China. "Thus, a hostile U.S. military posture in the Pacific is unwise and may unnecessarily create tensions.” . CHINA LOOKS INWARD In fact, this paper says almost exactly what this commentator and many others have been saying, literally, for years, in almost the same words. China does NOT have the western insistence on ruling the world – instead, it wants to maintain its borders and have positive relationships with other countries. “China's aims are unambiguous, enduring, and limited: It cares about its borders, sovereignty, and foreign economic relations,” the paper says. . COLBY IS WRONG China’s legal land area includes Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang, and it just wants to keep them. That’s all. The article quotes Elbridge Colby, now Deputy Secretary of Defense, envisioning China subjugating Taiwan and then picking out further targets to take over, including the Philippines and Vietnam. That is simply wrong, the researchers say. China has never made the slightest indication that it wants to take control of other countries. (And of course some newspapers reported that China wants to invade Australia!) . NOT PROPAGANDA This very lengthy paper in the journal of International Security is not, I repeat NOT, some sort of “pro-China propaganda”. The article is written by two US-based political scientists and one UK-based academic. The writers are in fact rather harsh about China, and recycle the endless trope implying that China is the world capital of human rights abuses (which it clearly isn't), and says that China is doing terrible things in the South China Sea – which is also not true. The writers do seem to have sucked up lots of the anti-China propaganda themselves. So that makes their work, which shows clearly that China is NOT a threat to the world, more valuable.
