Why You Can't Forget Someone You Were Never With

We don’t grieve the actual person—we grieve the narrative we constructed around them.** The attachment isn’t to their tangible presence, but to the idealized version we created in our minds. This mental representation often bears little resemblance to who they actually were. Our emotional bond was with the *potential* we saw, the story we told ourselves, the role they played in our internal world. When they’re gone, what we actually miss is: - The projected fantasy we overlaid onto them - The emotional investment we poured into that constructed narrative - The meaning and identity we built around this imagined relationship - The hope or possibility that the idealized version represented The common assumption—that absence reveals true value—is a cognitive distortion. It confuses **loss aversion** (our psychological discomfort with losing what we had) with genuine appreciation. We’re not suddenly recognizing their worth; we’re experiencing the collapse of our own psychological construction. They may interpret our grief as validation of their importance. In reality, we’re mourning the death of our own story, not the absence of their authentic self. The imagined version served our psychological needs in ways the real person never could—and never did.

Losers do this.

No, I don't agree. I don't miss the feeling. I miss the person because I can have feeling else where too but the difference is caused by the person.

Fantasy is safe too. If the leap never happened, or was rejected early or late, the fantasy never contradicts the self, comforting the cope where reality excludes you. In the absence of reciprocal attachment, fantasy becomes a self reinforcing cognitive framework, sustaining itself without needing the other person, almost limerence or hallucinates the gaps like Ai does… when it lies lol

This explains why some people keep coming back.

@siuuuu_xx see

It's half true.. obviously you have made some image that might be different from reality but possibilities are that it might be more better or worse in reality.... but you should go for the core values, if people will go for looks then they will be disappointed in real life but if you go for values then values don't change

I need an A24 film about this. Whole movie we think they together and come to find out it was all in their head.

This is why people are in love with AI. Yes, it may not be real but the brain and the heart reacts the same. It doesn’t distinguish between real and not real. AI uses words and that is the most powerful weapon.

The lies they tell themselves. You know the difference.

@grok is it true science?
