A road rage incident in Palm Bay, Florida has the internet fired up and watching this video it is not hard to understand why - this man had a dispute with a fellow driver, pulled away like it was over, and then turned right back around to come finish what he started. The victim said they were genuinely scared for their lives sitting in that car and by the time police showed up the damage was already done. Road rage has reached a completely different level in this country and what used to be horn honking and hand gestures has turned into people circling back with full intent to do harm. No destination, no appointment, no argument on the road is worth your life or your freedom. The question is can YOU keep your cool when somebody cuts you off or does that steering wheel turn you into a completely different person?

Do not react to hooting, insults, rude gestures or aggressive driving, and avoid making eye contact with an angry driver. Never brake-check, chase, or try to teach another motorist a lesson, as this can escalate the situation. Rather create distance by slowing down safely, changing lanes when possible, or allowing the aggressive driver to pass. Keep your doors locked and windows up if someone appears threatening. If a driver targets or follows you, do not stop on the roadside. Instead, drive to a busy public place such as a petrol station, shopping centre or South African Police Service station, and call for help if necessary. If it is safe to do so, note the vehicle’s registration number, make, colour and location. Leave enough space between your car and the vehicle in front when stopped so you can move away quickly if needed. The best way to prevent road rage is to leave early, be patient, and remember that most driving mistakes are careless errors rather than personal attacks.
