Home robots are coming. The first ones in will be the small ones that are safe around kids and pets. Hugging Face's Pollen Robotics just opened pre-orders for Microduck, a $399 biped. 25cm, under 800g, 15 motors, a camera, a small LiDAR, two IMUs, and an articulated beak that picks things up. Ships with 7 pre-trained behaviors including walking, kicking, and roller skating. Open on GitHub under Apache-2.0: the SDK, the simulator, and the RL training pipeline. So you can teach it new tricks.

This robot assistant from the NVIDIA CES Keynote on Monday is going viral. Nader Khalil🍊 explains all the hottest emerging AI trends in one demo: AI applications in 2026 will be multi-model, multi-modal, hybrid cloud/local, use open source models as well as proprietary models, control robots and embedded devices in the physical world, and have voice interfaces. (And the demo had a cute robot *and* a cute dog. Gold.) The demo was built with Pipecat AI. NVIDIA posted a really nice technical walk-through and complete code. The Reachy Mini robot from Hugging Face is open source hardware. (You can order it now, I have one!). You can run the assistant locally on your own hardware, in the cloud, or both.

A test: A staff member frequently interrupts the robot to see if Astribot S1 can recognize the empty cup until it correctly selects it, picks it up, and autonomously fills it with popcorn, all in one go. It woke up lying flat on its back inside a foam-lined shipping case in the middle of an ordinary office — desks, a small Christmas tree, nothing staged. Its legs bent upward, then extended, pushing it out of the case. It rolled, braced with its arms, lifted its torso, and stood up to full height right next to the open box it arrived in. Chinese subtitles ran the entire time as the robot calmly narrated its own startup: warning that it was about to move, asking not to be touched, confirming its position, then requesting that the packaging be cleared so it could start work. This is AGIBOT. The company that shipped more than 5,168 humanoid robots in 2025 — more than any competitor globally — and hit its 15,000th unit produced by mid-2026. Not a staged reveal. Not a product launch. Just a robot that ships itself in a box and gets up on its own. The unboxing used to be the boring part. Now it’s the demo.

This is what open robotics actually looks like! 🔓 I was in Bordeaux, sitting inside Pollen Robotics, and had a chance to play around with their humanoid robot Reachy 2. It’s expressive, modular, and can even bring you coffee, and of course runs Python or Rust. I was talking with Reachy in 3 different languages, tele-operating it and manipulating kitchen stuff, and make it even mimic my gestures. The best part is that there are no locked APIs, or hidden stuff, just an open platform that you can build upon. The connection with Hugging Face makes it super easy to start, as the open source approach allows everyone to contribute, experiment and add their own things.
