My cousins and my brother and I were exploring Coney Island, we saw the sights, hung out at the arcades and before we went back to the apartment we decided to go and get something to eat, we had some money on us but not much so we decided to see what we could get at one of the vendors. This was back in the early 90’s when most of them had dollar slices of pizza wherever we went. So we got 4 pieces of pizza, should have been $4 because that’s the price we were used to. The guy wanted to charge us $24 at $6 a slice. We argues with him because one of my cousins already took a bite being so hungry. But at the least we owed $4. We gave the other slices back and refused them but had to pay for the partially eaten one, it was embarrassing that an adult would try that on a bunch of kids. We told our uncle what happened and he went back and yelled at the vendor. He was familiar with them because he used to get slices all the time from the same guy and he never charged my uncle that price. I couldn’t imagine paying that exurban amount, like this guy who was being charged $54 for a hotdog by one of the vendors. At first he thought it was a typo and it was $5.40 but the vendor. Learned it up when he said no it was $54. Would you have paid that amount? I would have walked away, clearly he was trying to possibly scam a the man for looking like a tourist. Part of the experience when visiting a new area is the street food but it’s becoming more and more a chore avoiding places like this.

Alan J. Pakula on how he gave confidence to Jane Fonda- who wanted to quit "Klute" (1971) two days before the filming began: "I remember this disastrous moment in the making of this film, which was at the end of the last day of rehearsal. It was Friday and we had been rehearsing for three weeks. I had rehearsed four weeks on my first film and I thought that’s the way to go. We were gonna start shooting on a Monday in New York. At the end of the day on Friday Jane came up to me and she said, “Alan, I want out. I don’t know what I’m doing. I just think I’m wrong for this. I don’t think it’s going work. Get somebody else.” And I said, “I’m not letting you out. I think you’re going be wonderful in this.” Her panic was real and genuine. She had no faith at that point for whatever the reason. I then met with my production manager and the whole production team and I said we have to change the entire schedule for next week. We were set to do a major scene inside a set that we had rehearsed. I thought it would give everybody confidence. But because Jane had no confidence I felt we had to get her into it very gradually. So I said, we have to start with little bitsy scenes, just until she gets over this stage fright. That means doing walks in New York and going into phone booths and other little scenes. Well, that poor crew and the location people went through hell because that meant shooting in actual locations on New York streets and that meant getting all the necessary permissions. It made for a terrible weekend and a terrible week for a lot of the crew because I was demanding it from them. But it was right. By the end of the latter part of that first week, Jane did a scene where she auditions to be an actress, and I could feel her confidence really coming back again. As a director you always have to be ready and do a lot of planning and then you have to be prepared for everything changing at the last second." ('The Directors Take two', Robert J. It was funny ‘cause we did it we did a…this is not really the kind of thing I should have made, but we did a competition. It was like a competition and I really really wanted to put a kit forward for it. It was just like a fan competition. And I will say I saw some of the designs. I was pretty happy with my design, but in the end, I didn’t want people to realize that I’d done it. It felt like special treatment, so, I just gave the credit to me granddad and he actually went on local news claiming that he’s designed the thing and that was that (He wanted it to be fair😭)That was this kit. I’m near certain of it. Unless we did a remake that was kind of similar. Yeah. Richard Donner on why he made 'Superman' (1978) & the movie's connection to François Truffaut's 'Jules & Jim' (1962): "I certainly didn’t know it when we were making 'Superman' (1978) [that it would have a profound impact on millions of people around the world]. I was just trying to make the best movie I could make. I think it was during the first showing I attended — not the opening, but a regular screening in a theater, in New York. I watched the audience experience that movie and I was very moved, very excited. Before I came on board, the script was kind of a parody of a parody, It had been really well written by three or four really good writers, but they had been directed by a couple of Hungarians [producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind] who saw it as a comic book rather than a piece of history. Their script didn’t have any respect for what the character stood for, since I was a little kid. Tom Mankiewicz and I had known each other for years, and we’d always talked about working together, so I presented him with the problem, I asked him to bring a sense of reality, or verisimilitude, to the story. I wanted to be able to prove that a man could fly. Tom rewrote the entire script. Years before, there had been a French film called 'Jules and Jim' (1962, Truffaut), a great film. Two guys fall in love with the same woman. That’s what Superman was: two guys in love with the same woman. It happened to be that the two guys were the same guy, but not in the woman’s eyes. I asked Tom ‘How do we make that into a love story?’ He just fell right into it." I was trying to let the audience know that they were not looking at a comic book, or what had been done with Superman over the ages. This was the true story of Superman. mingyu talking about their tiny desk concert video 🖤 🐶 i wasn't able to sleep until 5am earlier, i wanted to post the tiny desk video on my ig right away and i feel proud [of what we did] and i was really nervous as well. we were in washington dc for around 5 days and we rehearsed for that to prepare and then filmed, and it wasn't really easy. we really had nothing - there was no audio coming out from the mic and it was just my raw voice. we didn't have any in-ears, we weren't singing over a backing track either but with a live band so i was pretty nervous. so i was contemplating if i should do it or not but i kind of just went for it at the end. it was a good experience and i just went for it thinking, "when will we ever get to do this?" seeing us, seventeen, on npr is so fascinating in itself and i felt very proud of what we achieved that's why i liked it.

Samuel L. Jackson explains how he landed the role of Jules in Pulp Fiction, and what it was like seeing the film for the first time on the big screen: “Pulp Fiction and I came together in a very strange kind of way. I remember auditioning for Quentin for Reservoir Dogs in New York (for the role of of Detective Jim Holdaway, Mr. Orange’s police contact). And apparently I didn't get that role. But I was at Sundance the year that he screened it for the first time. I was sitting there and I watched that movie - I was awed by it. I mean, there were people running up the aisles when Michael Madsen was cutting the cop's ear off. People were going, "Oh my God, this is horrible!" All these “auteurs” were running out of the theatre. I was like, "This is good. This is happening. This is different." So after the film, I walked up to Quentin and said, "This film's amazing, man. It's great." And he looked at me and said, "Hey! How'd you like the guy who got your part?" And I was amazed that he even remembered who I was - but he remembered me. A year or so later, I got a phone call saying Quentin Tarantino wants to have dinner with you, because he'd seen Jungle Fever and he liked that Gator character. When we had dinner, we were sitting there talking. We started talking about Hong Kong films and cartoons and foreign movies and obscure things that we watched, horror movies. We found out we liked the same kind of stuff. And he told me he was writing this thing, and he was writing this part with me in mind. He was going to send it to me. I went off to do another film. I was in the backwoods of Virginia somewhere doing a film, and the script came. A little plain brown wrapper from Jersey Films. And Jersey's got these gangster images on the logo. And it said, "If you show this script to anybody, two guys named Ernie and Luigi will come and break both of your legs." Whatever. I went, "Yeah, right." So I sat down and read it. Boom. I read this thing. It's like, "Oh my God. This is awesome." And then I said to myself, "Nobody writes a script this good. There's no way that this script is as good as I thought it was." I closed it. I opened it again. I read it immediately. Okay. This is great - If whoever produces this film lets him shoot exactly what I just read, if they stay away from it, they don't try to edit any of this stuff out - this is going to be a great film. It's going to be kind of audience-specific, because I like that kind of stuff. I have friends that I knew would like it. It was a generational kind of film. I never thought it would cross over and do all this stuff. We shot it. We had a great time doing it. And the first time I actually saw the film was at the Cannes Film Festival. That night, it screened, and I was sitting there watching the film. The audience was loving this movie, loving it. About halfway through, I realized there were subtitles at the bottom of it. So I said, "Hey, these people are reading it, and they're getting it. This might be special. This really might be something special." And actually, by the time it was over, there were tears running down my face. BACK STORY: A teacher friend told me this story about teaching kids words with different suffix examples and when he asked his students for words ending in “an”, a grade one student said “lesbian”. No big deal but the writers and I thought it would be funny to run with that a bit. So we wrote the cold open as you see in the photos of the script. On the day of filming, two of the writers, Shebli Zarghami and @Jessie_Gabe came to me and suggested we add “words that end in “on”-prostitution”. So I ran with that and the kids and I improvised what you see in the scene. At that point, we were done with the scene and very happy about it. In my opinion, what Jessie and Sheb suggested next is what made the scene go viral BUT, we were too late because they thought of it AFTER, we had already shot (videoed) the kids. I spoke with Keith our director and suggested it was worth grabbing a wild line (no camera) of adding one more word suffix and joke that Jessie and Sheb thought of: “Words that end in “re”- crack whore”. It would be take too much time to turn all the cameras around to shoot Faith saying two works (crack whore) but I thought the line was so funny, that it was worth grabbing it. So we did and the that’s why you don’t see Faith saying the line but for me, it took the scene to another level. On this show, we always added lines on the day from anyone who had them, especially the writers. We wrote great scripts but sometimes we found these little moments on the day of filming that added to the scene. We never stopped looking for the funny and in this case the instincts (and comedy) of Jessie and Sheb took this scene to another level!! #MrD

BACK STORY: A teacher friend told me this story about teaching kids words with different suffix examples and when he asked his students for words ending in “an”, a grade one student said “lesbian”. No big deal but the writers and I thought it would be funny to run with that a bit. So we wrote the cold open as you see in the photos of the script. On the day of filming, two of the writers, Shebli Zarghami and @Jessie_Gabe came to me and suggested we add “words that end in “on”-prostitution”. So I ran with that and the kids and I improvised what you see in the scene. At that point, we were done with the scene and very happy about it. In my opinion, what Jessie and Sheb suggested next is what made the scene go viral BUT, we were too late because they thought of it AFTER, we had already shot (videoed) the kids. I spoke with Keith our director and suggested it was worth grabbing a wild line (no camera) of adding one more word suffix and joke that Jessie and Sheb thought of: “Words that end in “re”- crack whore”. It would be take too much time to turn all the cameras around to shoot Faith saying two works (crack whore) but I thought the line was so funny, that it was worth grabbing it. So we did and the that’s why you don’t see Faith saying the line but for me, it took the scene to another level. On this show, we always added lines on the day from anyone who had them, especially the writers. We wrote great scripts but sometimes we found these little moments on the day of filming that added to the scene. We never stopped looking for the funny and in this case the instincts (and comedy) of Jessie and Sheb took this scene to another level!! #MrD

John Carpenter on how Howard Hawks's "Rio Bravo" (1959) inspired him to become a filmmaker: "As I got older I began to see that certain directors did certain things. One of the earliest examples of this was Roger Corman. I started going to see these exciting, fast, kind of cheesy but really fun monster movies, and there was one name that kept coming up on the screen: Roger Corman. 'It Conquered the World' (1956), 'Not of This Earth' (1957), 'Attack of the Crab Monsters' (1957), 'The Undead' (1957)... But | really understood for the first time what a director did when I saw 'Rio Bravo' in 1959. There was something about that movie that was like home and I can't really explain it. It was held over in Bowling Green for three or four weeks in a row because people kept coming to see it. I abandoned to see what was new in the other movie house in town to see this movie every weekend again and again because there was something in it that was different from the other westerns I had seen. I had certainly seen John Wayne before. He had become a part of my growing-up experience. He was the action guy, the cowboy. He was the guy in 'Flying Tigers' (1942) who was flying the airplanes. So what was so different about that movie? Then I became aware of this credit: “Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.” I looked at the poster and I said to myself, “Who is this guy? He didn't write the movie and he wasn't starring in it so why is his name up here? And why is he last in the credits?” All these things started to occur to me, but it was the emotional impact of the film that got me to start using my brain. Some way I figure out that this director made that movie." I felt the best in the car this weekend and I really feel like this small tweak we made into qualifying was just right and we're making tweaks as we're going through this session just with wing and Q3 run one felt good and I did a really good prep laps and then when I started my lap my SM wasn't on and I was down already like a tenth and a half or two tenths into turn one so that and then I had turn seven because I was trying to floor it back so you know but it's nice I think we probably could have fought for third I think that was the case yesterday as well but it means like a perfect lap out of our car and um but the good thing is that we're kind of we are improving and I really hope that I can take this sort of performance home for the season." I remember taking a trip to Florida in my teens. We were sightseeing , new to the area. I was just enjoying the sun and the warm weather for once, I didn’t expect to see anything out of the ordinary. It finally hit me as we were enjoying a drink on the water, we see what looks like a floating log. Our friend who owned the boat said to keep our eyes open and don’t freak out, as long as we were in the boat we were fine. Just hearing that alone was almost panic inducing because he didn’t tell us what we were supposed to be careful of. When the “log drifted under the water, I finally understood what it was that we were looking at. Our friend had us piled in a boat on water infested with these gators. Being from up north, we didn’t see much of this. It made me believe I was in my own movie but I was going to be okay, I thought to myself if it was truly dangerous, our friend wouldn’t have brought us out there right? I stayed calm though, I never knew you could fish in areas that had gators, I assumed they would always go after your bait. All in all I would do it again, but I would never have taken anyone in the water and not tell them about the inhabitants, just in case they have a real phobia. Like I would never take my kids in there in case one panics and falls in. But looking back I’m thinking he may have been in the wrong for taking us there, would you take your friends in an area infested with these creatures not knowing? It’s a little messed up in my opinion but I’m over it.
