After developing Raid on Bungeling Bay (1984), apparently Will Wright liked building maps for the game more than playing it, which ultimately led him to pivot and create a city-building simulation. The Game Boy was launched in 1989, sold almost 120 million units, and was eventually discontinued in 2003 - an incredible lifespan for a handheld console, the longest ever, unless I am overlooking another? One of the games that was availabe with the launch was Super Mario Land, and it became one of its highest selling titles (18 million cartridges), being part of the early and massive success of the Game Boy. By the way, all this with a mere 8 KB of RAM. That's 1/8th of the good old C64. Super Mario Land was essentially a perfect game, getting the absolute maximum out of the Game Boy at the time. I remember that even my mother and sister playing it, while before that computers games were really not their thing at all.

He discovered he had much more fun creating and tinkering with the maps than actually playing the helicopter shooter. That experience directly inspired him to make Sim City (1989). The map editor in Raid on Bungeling Bay became the foundation for the city-building simulation that evolved into Sim City. Here's a quote from an old interview: "To create this game I had to draw all these islands that the helicopter would go bomb... Instead, I wrote a separate program, a little utility, that would let me go around and build these islands real quick. I also wrote some code that could automatically put roads on the islands... Eventually I finished the shoot-’em-up game part, but for some reason I kept going back to the darn thing and making the building utilities more and more fancy." Thank you, Bungeling Bay map editor! You were the origin of gaming history!

The green R The yellow I The blue C Those three letters and colours are forever burned into my nerdy gamer brain until the end of days. The original Sim City (1989, Maxis) is one of the most timeless games I can think of. I hope that future generations will still play this in 50 years from now. I simply love games that have endless replay value. You can always find a new little detail, a new way to play, set yourself new goals or even handicap yourself. A great early days sandbox game. The older I get, the more appreciate the genius that went into its design and creation. Will Wright will forever be linked to what made 80s and 90s gaming what it was: brilliant and unforgettable.

The Last Ninja (1987) by System 3 is considered to be the best selling game ever for the C64 with 2 million units sold. Not the most complex game in history, but possible one with the biggest "wow" factor when first playing it, seeing incredibly beautiful pixel art graphics, one of the best soundtracks ever (Ben Daglish, Anthony Lees), and just hitting perfectly on that 80s Karate and Kung-Fu vibe, which probably captured every teenage boy's mind at the time. Closing in on 40 years and The Last Ninja still gives me nerd chills more than any other game.

I grew up with the C64 (early 80s) as so many of you here. My very first game ever, the one that my brother and I played to death, was Falcon Patrol (1983) designed by Steve Lee. If there is one sound I will remember until my final days, it will be the refueling sound of the jet. What was your first computer and the very first game you played on it? (Not a game that you played at your friend's place or at the arcades - but the first game on your very own first computer)

Most people will associate the name Jordan Mechner with Prince of Persia - and who can fault them, it's an incredible game. But when you go back further in history, to the year 1984, and think about what kind of innovation, dedication and skill went into Karateka, I find it even more mind-blowing. Karateka was the first game to use rotoscoping, where Jordan Mechner filmed his karate coach performing moves and then hand-traced (!) each frame to create fluid, realistic animations on the limited hardware that was available back then. Think about the endless hours of work required to hand-trace the frames... by yourself! Add to that the actual programming effort, two years of solo development, while also being a student at Yale. When I was a student, I hardly did my weekly project assignements, let alone anything beyond that. Talk about focus and discipline at a young age! And to top it all off, the game sold half a million units, making it Borderbund's best selling game at the time. Back then, my teenage brain didn't care about all that of course, I simply liked the game - but the older I get the more I am in awe of Karateka. Truly deserving to be in the Hall of Fame of gaming history.

Beach-Head, published in 1983 by Access Software, is one of the hardest C64 games I have ever played. I was 8 when I first gave it a shot, so maybe that was part of the reason but even in my teenage years I still struggled to get to that final mega-bunker/fortress monstrosity at the end. It was extremely successful back in the day, selling around 250,000 copies, an excellent number for the early 80s, and especially for being one the first games from Access Software. The same programmer (Bruce Carver) went on to also make Raid over Moscow one year later, another classic of 80s gaming history - and one that was equally hard (especially that damn hangar!). I think in terms of design and gameplay you can see how they are related.

I was 8 or 9 when I first gave it a shot, so maybe that was part of the reason but even in my teenage years I still struggled to get to that final mega-bunker/fortress monstrosity at the end. Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

Ever since the first SimCity (the C64 version was the first one I played, then Amiga, then MSDOS), I’ve spent thousands of hours playing games in this series (I can’t count them all, but it’s definitely somewhere around that). And I’m really glad that SimCity 4 (with mods) is still an excellent city builder game. And while I may have a soft spot for SC, SC2000 and SC3000, I still consider SC4 to be the best installment. Anyway - good night, y'all!

John Cena and CM Punk haven’t wrestled since February 25th, 2013. A match that was never billed as a finale to what I consider to be the greatest rivalry ever, but yet is the most perfect ending I could ever think of for their story. An epic that’ll live on forever and is not only the greatest TV match of all time, but in my opinion the second greatest match in the history of wrestling. Wrestling soulmates do the dance one final time, and it’s magic.
