Willem Dafoe has never won an Oscar. Writing that sentence feels wrong for countless reasons. I mention that because Dafoe might get his Oscar moment this year with his new film - Late Fame - but the reality is that Dafoe doesn’t need an Oscar to validate his career. Take a film like Mississippi Burning, a film that earned Gene Hackman and Frances McDormand Oscar nominations, but not Dafoe. All of which is to say that Dafoe has spent his entire career without ever receiving the true recognition he deserves.

In this scene in David Lynch's "Wild at Heart" (1990), Willem Dafoe is actually ur! nat!ng in the toilet when he visits Laura Dern. Apparently, Willem Dafoe had drunk a great deal of bottled water before the filming of this crucial scene and really needed to go. Only a little later did he find out that the toilet in the room was a prop and was not connected to a drain, and some poor member of crew had to clean it. (Source: DVD Extras of 'Wild at Heart' & IMDb) P.S: Happy 71st birthday, Willem Dafoe!

Mississippi Burning is a great, great way to spend a Sunday morning if you need a film to watch. This is available on demand & it features Gene Hackman & Frances McDormand in Oscar-nominated performances, as well as a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Hell, this film earned a boat-load of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It’s excellent and worth your time.

Mississippi Burning premiered OTD in 1988. One of the finest movies of the 80s, featuring an amazing ensemble cast. Willem Dafoe, Frances McDormand, Brad Dourif, Michael Rooker, R. Lee Ermey, Frankie Faison etc. And Gene Hackman was on fire here, which is saying quite a lot.

Spike Lee’s Inside Man should be mentioned as one of Spike’s best films ever. Denzel is incredibly magnetic in this film- I think it’s one of his best post-Training Day performances. The entire cast is also excellent, from Clive Owen to Chiwetel Ejiofor to Willem Dafoe & Jodie Foster. That’s all without mentioning the late Christopher Plummer, who himself is exceptional in this film. I truly love this movie.

The President of Movies is making a massive run for Oscar glory this year with his upcoming release Digger, but regardless of whether he wins an Oscar in his 64th year doesn’t matter to me: this man has pushed Cinema forward as much as any human ever.
