Mississippi Burning is a great, great way to spend a Sunday morning if you need a film to watch. This is available on demand & it features Gene Hackman & Frances McDormand in Oscar-nominated performances, as well as a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Hell, this film earned a boat-load of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It’s excellent and worth your time.

Willem Dafoe turns 71 today. An actor defined by his versatility, Dafoe is always interesting. His Oscar-nominated role in sean baker’s The Florida Project is impossible to forget. Dafoe shows a lot of range in this performance, which doesn’t require him to wear a crazy costume or embrace a crazy character. This is one of the more “normal” parts Dafoe has ever taken on. And he knocks it out of the park. 🎂

Matt Damon didn’t even receive an Oscar nomination for The Departed, which is relevant as his stars in The Odyssey next week, a film that might earn Damon his first acting Oscar. Damon’s quietly been snubbed by the Academy a handful of times over the course of his career & this might be the most egregious. He holds this entire film together along with Leo.

Paul Schrader wrote & directed the 2021 release The Card Counter & I feel like I’m the only person who ever talks about this movie. Oscar Isaac & Willem Dafoe are excellent here- especially Isaac - and this is probably the best script from Schrader this decade, which I know doesn’t necessarily say that much. If you haven’t seen this film yet, I think it’s worth your time.

Eddington didn’t earn any #Oscar nominations today but I don’t think that came as a big surprise to many- at least not to me. Surprising or not, I still think this film deserved Oscar recognition & was one of the year’s best films. Not to mention Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding.

John Goodman has never won an Oscar- Hell, he’s somehow never even been *nominated* for an Oscar. I desperately hope that changes with Goodman’s performance in the upcoming film Digger alongside Tom Cruise. Goodman is everywhere in the trailer Cruise released today. I’ve also read early reviews singing Goodman’s praises. I hope this is finally his moment.

The Blind Side’s critical success never made sense to me. This movie feels like a Disney Channel Original film that somehow earned a Best Picture nomination. I’m a Sandra Bullock fan but I still don’t know how she won an Oscar for this movie. This is an average film at best.

Frances McDormand hasn’t made many films since winning her third #Oscar for Nomadland. I don’t necessarily blame her, but at 68, I like to think that McDormand has a few more iconic performances up her sleeve. McDormand is really excellent in this film- she’s always excellent.

Spike Lee’s Inside Man should be mentioned as one of Spike’s best films ever. Denzel is incredibly magnetic in this film- I think it’s one of his best post-Training Day performances. The entire cast is also excellent, from Clive Owen to Chiwetel Ejiofor to Willem Dafoe & Jodie Foster. That’s all without mentioning the late Christopher Plummer, who himself is exceptional in this film. I truly love this movie.

Michael Clarke Duncan earned an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Green Mile. I never really write about this film- I should change that. This is such a great late ‘90s movie with a vintage Tom Hanks performance. Great, great film.

Ridley Scott did not win an Oscar for Gladiator. I know it was a competitive field back in 2001, but as time passes, it’s hard to accept that Scott won zero Academy Awards despite the film’s five wins overall. Part of the relevance of this comes from the fact that this year, Scott is receiving an honorary Oscar from the The Academy. I’m happy Ridley’s finally getting his credit but come one…Scott should own a statue just for this film alone.
