The inauguration of the Institute reminds us that the work being done by the ACEGID team is a global public good, benefiting not only Nigeria and Africa but also contributing to global health security. This is not just negligence it is a serious threat to public safety. Such a dangerous condition exists only because of the complete failure of monitoring and vigilance by the authorities. This is a clear example of how lives are being put at risk due to administrative apathy. Today, Labour blocked our Deportation Bill. Faced with a serious plan to fix our immigration system, they flat out refused to act. Our Bill set out real and immediate action. The automatic deportation for illegal arrivals, the disapplication of the Human Rights Act in immigration cases, and the powers to shut down abuse of our borders. It was bold, necessary, and ready to go, but Labour killed it. Instead, the Prime Minister is filling his time taking credit for the successful results of Conservative policies and being shut down by the Albanian Prime Minister, who confirmed there will be no UK returns hub with Albania. Labour must now explain to the public why they’ve chosen to keep the boats coming, protect the rights of criminals over victims, and ignore the very people they were elected to serve.

Religious freedom should never come at the cost of public safety. This man is still flexing a large lethal sharp blade in the name of religion in public. The ban on large and sharp kirpans should be implemented immediately. No one should lose their life because dangerous weapons are carried in public under religious exemptions. Respect for faith and respect for life can coexist. There are ways to honor religious traditions without putting others at risk. No more deaths in the name of religious freedom. Public safety must come first.

With World Health Organization (WHO)'s support, Ministry of Health- Uganda has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts. This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease. This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank Makerere University University and UVRI for their leadership, as well as Africa CDC, CEPI, EU HERA and IDRC | CRDI for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort. WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa has no business in the UK at this time, he should be leading a delegation of the service chiefs to Maiduguri immediately. I have been remotely involved in the activities on the state visit and the key issues that have dominated the conversations are on trade, business and investment. Unlike the visit to Turkey, the UK is not offering Nigeria any material support in defence and intelligence. So at best, he could have had someone else stand in for him on this trip. He has more serious demands on the home front. The Minister of defence came in with the ovation of all Nigerians and to whom much is given much is also expected. Nigerians want to see tangible improvements in the security situation. Himself and the service won’t be afforded excuses much longer. They must step up and justify the confidence President Bola Tinubu has reposed in them. Nigerians are impatient they want to see an overall improvement in the security situation. The clock is ticking.

Today a group of Muslims prayed next to the Ministry of Defence, facing the Iraq and Afghanistan memorial. As I have said before, choosing to pray in this way in public is a political act. It is a social statement and, yes, it is an act of domination. Anybody who understands Islamism understands that the domination of public spaces is part of the modus operandi. It is done so Islamists can show who is in charge - and to show other Muslims and the wider public that the authorities will bend to their will. There is quite obviously no need to pray here. The decision to do so is symbolic and pointed. It is not welcome. We have freedom of religion in this country, which is why there are mosques. But we are not a Muslim country and this is not welcome. It should be stopped.
