Schools in Ukraine have long been a target for Russian missiles. Russia destroyed hundreds of them and forced millions of Ukrainian children to study online or underground. Today, I visited one of such underground schools in Zaporizhzhia. Serving as a shelter and a safe space for education, it can accommodate up to 1,000 children safely and operates in two shifts. The frontline is just 30 kilometers away. Russian forces bomb the city every day. And yet, the children are studying. I joined a lesson and spoke with kids about their impressions of the school and their favorite subjects. Some of them are in the second and third grades but have only now met their classmates in person, having studied online until this moment. I am deeply grateful to everyone who builds these schools, to the teachers who continue their mission, and to everyone around the world who helps us protect our people and bring real peace and guaranteed security closer. It is exactly the lack of guaranteed security that forced our children to study underground. This is more than just a sign of Ukrainian bravery and resilience. Our children deserve a childhood without the threat of Russian bombs. And any long-term security strategy must take into account the safe future of these kids.

Our kids live their childhoods under Russian attacks in shelters. We weren't able to protect all of Ukraine but we had the opportunity to use Patriot air defense systems in large cities to shoot down Russian missiles. These systems literally saved countless lives of Ukrainian civilians. And we are immensely grateful for that. If we don't get missiles for Patriot systems, it will be much, much harder to protect our people, our kids. Russia doesn't stop its attacks.

Schools must be safe and happy places for kids, not scary ones. Strict action must be taken against this behavior. Thanks to Ukraine's Defense Forces and our efforts, we were able to instill more confidence in the Vochansk direction. But Russian shelling continues, and threats remain. Today, the head of the Vovchansk local administration was wounded. We also continue to counter Russian attacks in other border areas of the Kharkiv region. There should be more of our successes in repelling Russian attacks and destroying occupiers. Russia tries to expand the war while consistently making empty statements about peace. We must use all available means to force Russia to make a real and just peace. Our defense against Russian assaults and strikes is critical in this regard. We also continue to work closely with partners to provide better basic protection to our regions, particularly Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy. This includes additional air defense systems and long-range weapons. After returning to Kyiv from Kharkiv, I spoke with Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk. We discussed our defense needs, particularly "Patriot" air defense systems, which have the potential to significantly change the situation in the Kharkiv region. We also talked about Russian terror strikes on our regions in the west of Ukraine, as well as the threat that the attacks on our gas infrastructure pose not only to Ukraine, but also to our neighbors and all of Europe. We must all work together to counter this threat. Today, I would also like to thank Denmark for the new $750 million military aid package, which will strengthen our air defense and artillery. This is a very timely decision, and I appreciate it.

I honored the memory of those killed by a Russian ballistic missile strike—exactly one week ago. 19 people were killed by a Russian missile, including 9 children. I’m now in a shelter at the very school where three of those children studied—tragically, they were killed. That same day, there was also a Shahed drone attack, which claimed even more lives. Eternal memory to them all. Today, from right here in Kryvyi Rih, I addressed the participants of the Ramstein meeting in Brussels. Our top priority is air defense: additional systems and missiles for them—to protect lives and our cities. We are counting on our partners’ decisions. The world has the necessary systems, and what’s needed is a political decision for them to work here in Ukraine – in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and many other cities and communities. We discussed this with President Trump—Ukraine is not just asking, we’re ready to purchase these additional systems. Only powerful weapons can truly be relied upon to protect life when you have a neighbor like Russia. So that Ukrainian children can study safely—not just online, but in person, like in America, like across Europe—and not in underground classrooms, which may provide greater safety but which should not be the norm anywhere, but simply in schools. Air defense is our first priority. I thank all our partners who are already helping.

Today marks exactly one month since Russia rejected the U.S. proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire, one month that has made it completely clear – Russia is the sole cause of this war. Without strength against Russia, there will be no will in Russia to accept and implement any realistic and effective proposals for peace. Today, I’m speaking to you from Kryvyi Rih. This city lives under almost constant air alerts – because of drones or Russian missiles. The most dangerous threat is ballistic missiles. Exactly a week ago here, in this city, in Kryvyi Rih, a Russian ballistic missile killed 19 people – including 9 children. Just children, on an ordinary street. In Ukraine, we don’t have time for metaphors. Our people, our children are under attacks in many-many cities and villages: Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, and many others. They all need protection from Russian missiles. I called on the participants of today’s meeting of the Ramstein-format Contact Group to focus, first and foremost, on air defense for Ukraine. We truly need it. Ten Patriot systems – the free world has them. What is needed now are political decisions to make them work for peace. We need that result.

A rescue operation is currently underway in Zaporizhzhia after a Russian ballistic missile strike that hit city buildings. I have already spoken with the Commander-in-Chief about what is needed to enhance the safety of our cities. We are speaking with all our partners about providing additional air defense systems. Right now, we do not have enough systems to protect our country from Russian missiles. However, our partners have these systems. Once again, we reiterate: air defense systems should save lives, not gather dust in storage facilities. I am grateful to everyone for their support.

Parents are pulling their kids out of public schools, that’s a red flag. We have some of the highest levels of education funding, but our children still aren’t learning and our schools are some of the worst in the nation. This is Tina Kotek’s Oregon, she’s been falling students and parents, for almost four years, and we’ve had enough. When I’m Governor, we’re going to fix our schools and make sure funding goes to helping kids learn, not failed agendas and ideologies.

Our children deserve classrooms devoted to learning — math, science, reading, writing, history, etc. — not political indoctrination. And this is just part of a larger national issue. As a father of an educator, I know this is not who our teachers are, so why are we letting the union take control? ❗️Let me be blunt: Schools are for education, not agendas. When a government loves the land of a school more than the school itself — understand this clearly, that government isn’t working for you, it’s working for the builders. In the last 10 years, Mumbai has lost 114 Marathi schools, 19 Hindi schools, and 20 Urdu schools — all run by the BMC, the richest civic body in the country! Isn’t it ironic? The same city that proudly showcases the Coastal Road, Atal Setu, and underground metro can’t keep its schools alive for poor children. Behind the glitter of infrastructure lies a dark truth — the land meant for government schools is quietly being handed over to private developers. Towers now stand where kids were meant to study, and those same kids are told not to read out loud because “the rich residents are sleeping.” If this is the state of Marathi-medium education in Mumbai — imagine the fate of children in smaller towns across Maharashtra. Many of you asked me to focus on the state of government schools — so we investigated this issue in depth.
