All the cougars I've heard of east of the Dakotas have been solitary males. This is the first breeding female I've seen documented. If this population continues to spread into the Midwest, I sincerely hope humans can peacefully coexist with these magnificent animals.

I outfitted and guided for both Tom & Woods' and Don Beland in the late 90's and have been paddling in BWWCA and Quetico for decades before and since. The DNR always said the same. I was literally 10 feet from a cougar standing over a gut pile and the DNR wouldn't believe it.

rare but not the first. Someone documented cougar with kits near ely? back in the early 90s. NBC (kare11) had video. Been fighting this battle for years. A landowner in UP photographed cougar cubs on March 2025. They dont get to the UP before passing thru MN and WI.

It's been so fun having to pack a handgun bow hunting in MN forest the past few years to potentially defend myself from the new kitties in the woods. We had one on trail cams last year on our property.

We have routinely captured this male on camera over the past 3 months now suggesting he has taken up residency in the area and is occupying a territory (i.e., not wandering like dispersing males typically do). Note: we have had folks ask to see more of the footage we have captured of cougars over the past few months so we will try to share more footage in the coming weeks. We captured many hours of footage at the kill where we documented the female with 3 kittens as well as at the kill in early May by this male. We set this camera in a new spot last fall where a deer trail crossed a remote hiking trail. This video is a distillation of 7 months of footage totaling >2 hours. Suffice it to say, we were pleased with this spot and we hope you enjoy the footage! The camera was put up in late October. Most of the first videos captured were during the rut when several bucks were traveling on the deer trail. One buck, in particular, was a bruiser in terms of body size. And then as the rut winded down, the number of bucks on camera dwindled and does started using the trail more frequently for the rest of the fall and winter. Of course, wolves traveled on both the hiking and deer trail throughout the fall and winter. In some instances, wolves traveled down the hiking trail and then stopped to smell deer tracks on the deer trail. We suspect they were assessing how fresh the tracks were and therefore how close a deer might be. In some instances, wolves veered off the hiking trail and ventured down the deer trail, and in others, they continued down the hiking trail. Notably, we put this camera here because this is where the Cranberry Bay and Nashata Packs overlap. You can see both packs on cameras. Cranberry is the larger pack and Nashata is the smaller pack with a whitish wolf with green-ear tags. As mentioned above, we distilled >2 hr of footage into a 6 minute video. We did not include much of the nighttime footage, which was mainly of a snowshoe hare that spent a ton of time in front of the camera and deer traveling at night down the deer trail. We included most wolf footage in the video but there were a few nighttime sequences we excluded because they weren’t great quality. Interestingly, though, we did not get a ton of other wildlife on this camera other than wolves and deer.

More awesome footage of one of the most ethereal forest creatures: the lynx. We captured more daytime footage of lynx this past winter than in any previous winter, in large part, because we had many more cameras out this winter compared to previous years (had ~350 cameras out this winter). And more cameras means, we get more neat observations like these (plus higher-quality data on wolves in the area, which is the main reason we deploy so many cameras). Note: this is the 2nd video of our “best" lynx footage from this winter. See our post on Monday for the 1st video if you haven’t watched that one yet. Both have some pretty neat sequences in our opinion! The Listening Point Pack was 5 pack members (3 adults and two pups) and these are the wolves in most of the footage in this video. You can see two of the adults (the breeding male and a subordinate adult male) several times as well as the two pups. The December 2nd footage gives a great clear view of all 4 of these wolves. In two instances, it appears the Listening Point Pack killed deer near this camera as wolves were carrying deer legs past the camera on Jan 10 and Mar 3. The Mithrandir Pack was just a breeding pair last winter. You can see these wolves on November 11 and 20, and April 15. This area is on the periphery of their territory so not surprising we did not have many observations of them in this spot. We put a camera here over a year ago, unsure if it would be a good spot. Always lots of trial and error with cameras when trying to find good spots where wolves like to travel. But, it was a beautiful setting in some conifers along a small creek and we figured wolves would likely would travel through this more open terrain along the creek. Turns out, this was a pretty good spot. And it wasn’t just wolves that used this scenic stretch of forest as you can see. In total, we have captured more than 1,500 videos of wildlife on this camera in the past year or so (8.3 hours of footage). Most videos are of snowshoe hares and deer but wolves (the Half-Moon Pack) cruise through the area periodically as do most of the other forest predators. This 3 minute video is just a highlight reel of some of the most interesting footage. Big thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resource Trust Fund for their continued support of our work. That support allows us to share this footage and our findings with millions of people each year!

This small, remote wildlife trail yielded some amazing footage of wolves and other creatures over the past year this past winter (January to May). This trail is used by both the Mithrandir Pack (hence the name of the trail) and the Nashata Pack. Both packs are in this video, and are the primary reason we have a camera here—the other neat footage of other wildlife is just a bonus! We have put cameras on many small trails like this in hopes that they are used by wolves so we can get good observations. Often we put cameras out and they are total duds or just so-so. But every once in a while, we find a gem…and this is a gem in our minds. Also, this camera was from last winter…but you will notice the scenery hardly looks like a Minnesota winter. Thats because we basically did not have winter last year. Last year was the mildest winter on record for the Voyageurs area, and we had little snow cover for most of the winter and temps were regularly above freezing. Very odd times but made getting around the woods pretty nice!

We do a lot of trial and error to find good spots that wolves like to use often. The little trail is pretty close to the intersection of 3 different pack territories and we figured it might be a good place…and it was. We captured more footage of wolves and other animals on this camera that are not in this video. This video is just the highlights. Most of the other videos are at night. Notably, for every camera like this that gets great footage, we probably have 4 or 5 that are duds…and since they are duds, we don’t share that footage online!

This is the only wildlife trail we have found in our area that consistently has this kind of bear activity. We pulled the SD card on this camera yesterday so this is hot off the press! We thought it was super cool and wanted to share as we figured folks would enjoy it as well. Oh, and bears aren’t the only animals using the trail as you can see... The wolves in the video are members of the Whiskey Point Pack and most footage is of the breeding male (bigger wolf missing top of right ear), the breeding female, and two yearlings. Most of these wolves look really thin, with their pelvis clearly visible. Summer— late summer in particular— is the leanest time of the year for wolves, and these wolves’ bodies are evidence of that. P.S.-make sure to watch to the end if you want to see some neat moose footage! Lastly, HUGE thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for supporting our project, which allows us to capture and share footage like this.

If you enjoy videos like this, we need your help because almost all of our trail camera work is supported by donors. This footage was literally captured because of donors. We simply need folks who enjoy such content to make a small donation ($10, $25, $50) to our project at the link below to help us cover the costs associated with keeping 350-400 trail cameras going year round. $30 purchases batteries for a camera, $200 purchases a new camera set-up. Think about it: most people regularly pay $10-20 per month for Netflix, Hulu, etc. so those companies can create endless content and make money. All we are asking for is $10-20 a year to help us cover our costs, and keep this work going so we can share it with everyone. The pups of the Cranberry Bay Pack in a remote area of Voyageurs National Park. The den included a large area at the base of a large balsam fir that was surrounded on one side by really thick deadfall…which makes for a pretty impenetrable den. We tagged, weighed, and sexed all 6 of the pack's pups, and will use trail cameras for the remainder of the summer, fall, and winter to understand how many of these pups survive. Interesting footage of a bear visiting a wolf den this spring—a very close call for the pups who were outside the den literally a few minutes before the bear showed up. The bear’s behavior was quite interesting as well. Almost as if it knew it had stumbled into an area it shouldn’t have. Interestingly, we have captured several instance of bears visiting and checking out active wolf dens over the years. However, we have never captured evidence that bears have killed pups, though there was once such report from Wisconsin recently. This footage was only possible because of the generous folks who have donated to our project and supported our trail camera work. We are just 38% away from our annual fundraising goal, and need your help to finish it off. Amazing moments from the Northwoods that few ever see! Fortunately, trail cameras allow us to capture little snippets of the fascinating daily happenings such as these. As always, we would enjoy hearing folks favorite moment or sequence! Notably, all this footage was captured last fall and winter. As always, huge thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. Their funding and support allows us to share footage of the amazing wildlife of Minnesota with millions of people annually.

An interesting snippet of a wolf chasing a deer earlier this winter—the wolf was 6.5 seconds behind the deer. In particular, we found the bounding/leaping of the wolf as it ran intriguing. We have captured many hunting sequences like this on camera but have not observed one where the wolf was leaping like this. And that one leap was a pretty big one. We don’t know how the hunt played out after this brief observation.

Cool footage of 2 bull moose sparring from just 2 weeks ago! And then toward the end of the sequence another small bull decides to join in the fun. All-in-all, some trail camera gold! We’ve only captured this on camera one other time so far. But this footage is much better than our other observation, in part, because the lighting was almost perfect in this video. Suffice it to say, we were pretty excited to capture this footage. In total, the moose were in front of the camera for 14 minutes but we condensed it down to the highlights here. A fair portion of the videos were the bulls just standing there staring at each other.
