#SandyFire update - Ventura County firefighters and our mutual aid partners continue aggressive suppression efforts on the Sandy Fire south of Simi Valley. Crews are actively working to strengthen containment lines and hold the fire along the southern and eastern portions of the incident while aircraft support ground operations in steep and difficult terrain. The fire is currently mapped at 1,659 acres with 15% containment. Approximately 900 firefighters remain assigned to the incident working around the clock with helicopters, air tankers, bulldozers, firefighters and hand crews. Incredible scenes from behind the fire line as firefighters continue the hard work of building containment, protecting homes and communities, and suppressing hot spots on the #RossFire in Palo Pinto County. For days now, strike teams and crews from fire departments across North Texas have worked alongside local firefighters to battle this fire from the ground and the air. These crews are putting in long hours, working through challenging conditions, and doing what they do best.🔥 As of Saturday evening, the fire has reached approximately 90,000 acres and is 31% contained. There is still a long road ahead. Crews moved in quickly, bringing dozers, aircraft, and firefighters to the fire before it had a chance to grow. Dozers cut containment lines. Aircraft dropped retardant and water. Firefighters attacked from the ground. The Gelding Fire was stopped at 3 acres. For a videographer, getting to capture those first moments is rare. Views from the 24 Fire outside Fort Carson, now over 1,126 acres. The fire is making a run this afternoon. “Highway 115 remains clear and the fire made a significant run to the east and north. Air resources are working along the west flank of the fire per incident command. High winds and hot, dry temperatures have increased the fire’s activity, with the fire now standing at approximately 1,126 acres and 0% containment. The fire is currently reported at 50 acres with a moderate rate of spread in medium fuels and located in steep terrain with difficult access. Firefighters are aggressively working from the air and ground to attack the fire. Multiple fixed wing aircraft and helicopters are assigned to the incident along with over 100 firefighters assigned to the incident. Evacuation warnings have been issued for areas east of Lake Piru to the Los Angeles County line. Residents are encouraged to follow for the latest updates on evacuations.

In Boise, Idaho, Secretary Doug Burgum and I met with the men and women on the front lines to discuss how we strengthen prevention, improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, strategically stage aviation assets, and ensure our firefighters have the resources they need. As part of that effort, USDA and DOI are accelerating and improving fire prevention techniques to make our forests safer and less susceptible to uncontrolled wildfires through mechanical thinning, prescribed fire, and active forest management. These proactive steps support the more than 30,000 federal firefighters, 400+ aircraft, and all our state and local partners working to protect communities across the country. Under President Donald J. Trump, Dept. of Agriculture, U.S. Department of the Interior, and USDA Forest Service are working together to keep communities safe, protect our firefighters, and put fires out quickly. The fire remains static in its original footprint with no anticipated growth. Today, firefighters continue patrolling and reinforcing containment lines as well as addressing deep seated smoldering brush piles well inside the perimeter. Resources from VCFD and Ventura City Fire include Type 3 and Type 6 engines, a hand crew, water tender and one of our UAS / Drone pilots. Firefighters will remain on scene until this fire is fully contained. An IR flight of the fire by one of our UAS / Drone pilots shows the pockets of heat firefighters are working to address. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire began as a small grass fire and then spread to a pile of mulch, igniting several other large mounds of mulch. Firefighters worked to stop the flames from spreading to a warehouse on the property. No homes or businesses are in danger, and there have been no reported injuries. However, firefighters are facing challenges due to the extreme heat. Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Crews will continue fighting the fire overnight.
