In the weeks and months ahead, I ask that we remember President Lincoln’s words during an even more divided time: let’s proceed “With malice toward none” and “with charity for all.” I think you’ll agree that our nation’s discourse has grown far too extreme. It’s dangerous, unsustainable, and deeply un-American. It must not continue this way. Our country was founded on the premise that we’re a haven for different opinions, religions, and backgrounds. We thrive despite our differences. When we disagree, we do so respectfully. How we collectively decide to move forward will shine a light on how we want to be viewed as Americans, and I hope that we’ll proceed with dignity, respect and civility. Our political opponents are NOT our enemies. They are our family members, our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We need to all do a better job of listening to one another. A big focus of mine in the coming weeks and months will be reopening paths of dialogue and mutual respect. Let’s not be afraid to have difficult discussions about how we overcome our differences as Americans. Let’s commit to treating each other with the same kind of respect that we would want to be treated with. It won’t be easy and it may not happen quickly. But we can do this. And we must.

Unity is good, but truth is better. And sometimes, truth divides. Why does this happen so much more on the right than on the left? Because the left is seeking to destroy - the church, the family, the West - and destruction requires little agreement. Use whatever tool you want, however you want. Just take it down. But, on the right, we’re seeking to build something. And when you’re building something, you have to agree on a lot. What are you building? What materials should you use? Which tools? And, most importantly, what’s our foundation? As Christians, we hold that the foundation of any flourishing civilization is that we were created in the image of a God whose power transcends the government’s. He alone is the giver of rights and the determinant of right and wrong. We can’t compromise on that, because without that truth, nothing else in conservatism holds together. Our job isn’t to compromise on our foundation for the sake of “unity.” It’s to do everything we can to pull people over to our side—to what’s good, right, and true.

H. E. John Dramani Mahama does not know it all. Even if he did, he cannot do it all by himself. It’ll take the contribution of each and everyone of us to help build the Ghana that we want. So let’s support him in whatever way we can. Our country is at a crossroad now and so I don’t care if you’re NDC or you’re NPP. What we must focus on now as citizens of this country is the development of the country. If you’re indeed a Ghanaian who wishes well for Ghana, this is the time. This is the time to fold your sleeves and get your hands dirty. We’ve got a country to build. We’ve got a nation to set on the path of success not just for our generation but for those to come. I’m hopeful for a better Ghana and so must you be. For some of us, we have continued to support this country and the efforts of the governments that come and go.
