all it does is render the scene twice that's why it's in a small corridor so it doesn't have to render anything besides raiden and a wall

back then it was done very practically that's likely just another room with a duplicated player model

I remember shooting all the condiments in that storage room as snake just to watch the bottles react

@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN My favorite dev trick with the mirrors was to make a miniature room with a window like border place a another player model on the other side and mimic the interior around the mirror to simulate the reflection

It's not a mirror in basically sense . It's a copy of the room where (in this situation) Raiden in the mirror doing same what you do

Made me go insane back in the day , also the fact there wasn't internet made it much harder to find out were the bomb is as a kid but i really hope those days come back

2001 on PS2 That's why I say, game studios only fail to make good and well-optimized games nowadays if they don't want to or are incompetent.

It's just another character model and the same room on the other side that mirrors the character's movement. There is no actual reflection.

yeah but see the bigger picture, you get loading screens each minute, also modern games assets have complex geometry, mirroring an entire room with all its assets is very taxing while the game processes dozens of other actors the same time in the open map.

"kinda" did they use the same method they used in MGS1? where they just had the exact same map behind it but reversed?

I don't know if it's actual reflection or just the background and characters that are copy-pasted and reversed (a lot of reflections can be faked like that)

That's not a working mirror that is a duplicate that mirrors your movement in an unreachable room that is mirrored from your room too

working mirrors in old games existed, bu still was scarce and blurry, because you basically need stuff twice. if it's not blurry it probably just mirrored room with character duplicate, which is also very limiting.

Meanwhile, we got games like Dead Island 2 released over 20 years later, where "mirrors" aren't mirrors.

what's more impressive is that on the PS2, you can actually make the mirror foggy with the coolant spray. Little features like that got modded back into the master collection when the entire source code of the game leaked

Yep. That’s why a ps5 is more than enough graphical power nowadays. It all about good design now.
